Mud Flap Mounting

I am always intrigued by the innovated solutions derived by this crowd.

What amazing design does anyone have for mounting mud flaps to one’s TV while towing without spending the $250.00 for factory designed models?

The rocks are killing the front of my trailer, and I have found mud flaps I like. I would like to hear of any mounting solutions contrived by folks more inclined to build rather than buy.

I asked this question:......finally ended up with Duraflaps. I like 'em and they save the front of the Airstream.

They look like they could be duplicated easily with a good stiff, yet flexible, sheeting and then a stainless plate at the base for weight and looks.

I have Enkay Rock Tamers for my GMC Sierra -- they lift the bar holding the mudflaps higher than John's so there isn't as much space for rocks to sneak through. I've been very successful so far.

Silvertwinkie has a Suburban with Enkay Rock Tamers. The lower body behind his rear wheels sweeps up more than my truck. He's had some rocks sneak through and gotten some dings. He cut up a mudflap from a truck stop store and riveted it to the itty-bitty OEM 'burb mudflaps behind his rear wheels - extended it 4-5" (?) but it's been a long time since I laid eyes on them.

We mounted this unit onto our hitch. It was an easy mount, less than $100 and works really well. We too were getting upset over the few stray rocks that bounced over the front rock gaurds on the Safari. The other nice thing was I could drill a quick hole through it for the wiring harness.

Rick -- that looks like slitted thick rubber. It must work then. I've heard the hula skirts you see between mohos and toads ain't worth beans.

Bob, yes you are correct the grass skirts only look good on Hula-Girls! It is actualy PVC so it it sturdier (sp?) than rubber. I actually installed ours on our hitch in Maine a few days after our Airstream Wedding. Put 3K miles on it and it looks and works great. Bolts right onto the receiver so when we aren't towing no mess no fuss!

I know my Enkays are a heavy dog to put on. I've got to clamp it on the hitch bar and lift both up together into the receiver. It helps to plan ahead and position carefully.

Thanks for the replies. My main problem is not enough room for any brackets on the draw bar of the hitch. A triangle gusset is welded on the bottom side of the draw bar to brace the ball mount. A factory addition, not mine. This renders any of the factory solutions, or any over-the-draw bar bracket, inoperable.

I was hoping for another creative mounting idea.

not so much with the newer version...

steel rods and flap attachments iron is replaced with aluminum...

brass center bits replaced with chromed cast aluminum...

much lighter and shinier and 'steamier...

others have mounted angle iron arms directly to the tv receiver box, UNDER and forward of the hitch opening...

there are several photos of this arrangement in other threads...

then of course there are LARGE/WIDE/METAL/RUBBER flaps that attach at the wheel wells...

i've also seen one piece FULL coverage rubber skirting mounted below the rear tv frame, but ahead of the receiver...

and cloth skirts that run horizontially from tv to trailer (often used with toads and on the al-can trips)

I have the new style Enkay's. Pretty happy with them, but they are a little difficult to store when not is use.

Do you remove the flaps and bars when you take it off the truck?

It's still heavy, but at least it's not six feet wide.

Royce, your wish is my command ! My garage wall has open studs and I store my Rock Tamer at about belly button height so I can walk the Rock Tamer to the wall without bending over. I ripped a piece of fir 2-by so that it would go through the main hole at an angle and not crank the Enkay out of vertical.

I used a single carriage bolt through this piece. What really keeps my mounting shaft from displacing are a small piece of 2x4 fastened well above and below the fir shaft. This is right behind my garbage cans in the garage and very out of the way.

Scott- After the second ding in our AS I was going to make my own then found this one for less than $100 at a RV shop. I believe PPL has them in stock.

Good suggestion, I have the Al model and was worried about galling the threads from frequent dissasembly, so havn't taken it apart for storage yet. May start doing that once per year for winter storage. I have already noticed that the two small bolts that holld it on the stinger will work loose in travel. Could just remove the flaps, that would help a lot.

Thanks for the photo and storage idea. Really like your simple approach. I may use that idea in the future. For now I leave the entire setup on the Equal-i-zer drop stinger, and just set it on the floor next to the wall. Makes for quite a load at one time.

I do the same and just set it below the front of my truck when I'm using the rig frequently during the summer.
