With my Mercedes ML500 I get about 20 mpg without my Safari and about 14 mpg towing it.

I have a 1996 F350 crew cab diesel. I lose about 2-3 mpg towing my Airstream, versus running empty. If we tow with my wife's 2003 F150 4.6l V-8 we lose about 5-7 mpg depending on the terrain.

When we tow our Minuet (20 feet long and 2400 lbs):

Chevy 3/4 ton diesel truck:
  • 18+ mpg not towing
  • 16+ mpg towing.
Ford Explorer (manual transmission V6):
  • 20 mpg not towing
  • 9 mpg (or worse) towing

With our F250 with a gas engine and manual transmission, we get 14-17 not towing, and 9-13 towing 31' 7000 pound unit.

I get 13.5 not towing and 12.5 towing my 31 foot airstream. I get 9 towing my 24 ft race trailer. roughly 11000lbs maybe 12000lbs. I check my fuel economy, by filling the TV up then driving till 1/4 tank then fill up again and devide miles and gallons including decimals. On board computers are simply vacuum guages and arent always reliable.
