ML350 2011 vs. 2012

Looking to tow a 23' or 25' trailer. Will likely have either hitch reinforced by CanAm.

2012 is considerably more expensive, but it looks like it comes with a spare tire vs run flats (I assume the ride is nicer and understand that I can't throw the spare on while towing), has the AdBlue moved from the rear to the fuel filler which I believe clears access for a cleaner hitch reinforcement, and torque is up to 455 vs 400.

It's also redesigned a bit and has a reportedly nicer user interface for the electronics.

Does all that add to a better tow experience justifying the increased cost of the '12 vs. '11?

We have the 2012. Last September we had Andy at Can Am reinforce our hitch and set us up. We pull a 27' EverLite and could not be happier with his work. He met me personally at the door, wrote us up and took care us. We have relation in NY so we drove up from Florida, visited relation, then went to Can Am. The US customs thought we were nuts to drive all the way from Florida to have a "Trailer hitch" put on......... We average 15mpg towing, 28mpg around town and 34mpg on the highway......

I could be wrong, but I believe the 2012 only has a donut, not a full size spare. I don't think you can use the donut for towing. Some reviews I read mentioned the ride in 2011 was better. I guess a test drive of both SUVs can determine that for you.

Thanks guys. I guess what I'm wondering most is if the 2011 modification is relatively straight forward like the 2012 is. I've seen photos of the 2012 but not 2011. The 2011 seems to have the AdBlue tank in the way.

Anyone have a photo of a 2011 reinforcement?

Looking at prices realistically, the 2012 is about $10k more, +/- $35k vs. $45k. I can't see that the 2012 is worth the extra $10k from where I'm looking right now.

Aside from the other considerations, I hate run flats with a purple passion. Swapped them out of my BMW 550i and couldn't be happier. They ride like bricks and get noisy to boot.

Give Andy a call.....He or his crew will know.....
The spare on mine is full size but has a steel rim and is not a "regular" tire in that it is speed rated at 60mph. If you are not overloaded, And you have the proper WD setup, I cannot see what the problem would be to use it to get to the nearest tire facility. Granted, I wouldn't want to drive 60 and go hundreds of miles on it.

I've had both ML's. The '12 feels much easier towing because if the increase torque. Also has a much nicer interior. But its still 10k. Up to u.
