If you're doing a good bit of towing, especially in hilly terrain get the Bluetec. Well worth higher maintenance and fuel cost. Torque is your friend and the transmission isn't constantly downshifting to maintain speed. We have a 13 GL350 and would have gotten the ML but my 28ft International has 1/2 ton of tongue weight and needed the space. Also, concur with consulting Andrew, CanAm did my hitch reinforcement and helped me with improving my setup.

Thanks for the advice. Per the earlier thread conversation on the new ML250 BlueTec (i.e. a turbo diesel 4 cyl) ...I test drove it and was kind of disappointed. As with all diesels, torque was sufficient off the line, but unlike the 350 BlueTec it started feeling underpowered too early reaching highway speeds. On the new ML models they will no longer offer a 6 cyl. I'll keep looking for a certified pre-owned 350.

Hi Donny

We have done E class MB's before, it will tow the 23' very easily. Likely better than an ML. I would want to double check an 07 before you drove up here.

Andrew,

Thats good to know. We just picked up a low mileage CPO '11 E350 wagon. We are averaging 25 MPG on the highway but we use it mostly to take the dogs on the beach (4matic). Not looking to use as a tow vehicle any time soon, but I'll keep this in my back pocket should we decide to go that route for our 23 ft 07 Safari. Love the ride and handling of this vehicle, and we found one of the few made with the P2 package (incl Xenon lights) - seems there was a shortage of this package after the Japan quake. We opted for this in lieu of the ML250 or even newer XC90 Volvo, for now. Waiting to see how they evolve. Like others, the decision to go Gas on this one was easy given the current lower prices. We've always admired the E wagon.

Not even thinking about using our '14 E250 Bluetec for anything other than people transport, but love the highway mileage pushing 50 MPG and we are averaging 42 MPG overall after about 10K on the clock.

We are planning a trip to Canada soon, but its in our Sprinter RT van for some generator mods at the RT factory.

I agree with all of this post, except the "higher maintenance." Haven't experienced that. Fuel filters cost more on our BlueTec, but 12 spark plugs on a V6 gasser are pretty pricey, too.

For 2016, The ML looses the V6 diesel engine option (only a 4 banger available) but the GL still has the V6. Too bad they do not offer the small V8 diesel here like in the rest of the world for either the ML or the GL.

I'd wait in line to put a deposit down on a new GL V8 Diesel. Wow that would be the rig of choice for an Airstream!! Wonder if you could take Germany delivery and then have it shipped home.

Sadly, they stopped production of V8 GL diesel a couple years ago (it was being produced in Alabama). And unfortunately I believe you cannot import a used one either. It produced 300hp and 515 lb-ft of torque and got 24 mpg highway.

I just checked the UK Mercedes site and at least the V6 3.0L diesel is still an option there for the ML along with the 4 cylinder diesel.

No excuse for the V6 diesel not to be offered here, except for big oil allowing the choice of an anaemic 4 cylinder diesel, and underpowered thirsty V6 gas, a double turbocharged V6 gas or the AMG V8 (maybe 11 mpg) for 49,000 more dollars over base engine price.

The GL can still have the 3.0L V6 diesel.

I suspect the UK site is showing current models (2015), not the face lifted 2016 model. Mercedes Canada lists the 2015 ML, still with the V6 diesel. Rated 7000 lbs towing and 1705 lbs payload, doesn't seem bad.

The ML with V6 is offered outside the U.S. Market. In US its offered with I4 only (starting 2015).

I was at the dealership last week and looked at an ML and the sticker on the door jam said payload is 1080#. I would not plan on a 1700# of payload just based on the website as those numbers are almost always inflated by several hundreds of pounds. Door jam sticker is the payload for "your" vehicle.

Ron,

I'm curious about your conversation with Andy about this. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2015 ML350 pulling a 2013 30' Intl Signature. I spoke with one of his sales guy the other day about your comment and he responded that *all* the German diesel SUV's needed hitch reinforcement. In fact, he said the Ford F-series were the only TV's that didn't need any reinforcements.

I think JCL might have confused two vehicles - the ML doesn't have the high payload, the GL does. I checked one out over the weekend, door sticker 1695lbs.
