Lexus GX-460

We just replaced our 2006 Toyota Sequoia SR5 4WD 4.7L V-8 tow vehicle with a 2013 Lexus GX-460. We moved to downtown Portland from Las Vegas in 2010. As we downsized from a large home with a three car garage to a condo with one parking space we were looking to replace our two vehicles with one vehicle that could both be a tow vehicle for our 23' Airstream Safari (soon to be replaced with a 2013/14 23' Flying Cloud) and our everyday vehicle.

We were looking for a mid sized SUV. We checked out the European brands including the BMW X5 35d, Mercedes Benz M-Class, VW Touareg TDI. All these are nice vehicles with adequate towing capacity. However none of the European brands support using a WD hitch for towing. Although many forum members do use these vehicles with WD hitches (sometimes by modifying the vehicle by welding steel reinforcement to the hitch area) we could not , for potential liability and safety reasons, bring ourselves to take that route.

Very few choices were left in the mid-sized SUV segment including the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Lexus GX-460. The upcoming 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel may be an excellent tow vehicle, but we were worried about potential reliability problems. Our Sequoia has been trouble free so we decided to stick with the Toyota/Lexus family and go with the Lexus GX-460. The GX is traditional truck with a body-on-frame design. It has a towing capacity of 6500 pounds and a passenger and cargo capacity of 1315 pounds. It has two downsides the first being that Toyota does not offer diesels in the US, although they do offer them in the rest of the world, and the second is the "barn" door in the rear.

We have always wanted a Toyota 4-Runner. When we checked them out in 2006 the V-8 models had adequate towing capacity but a occupant and cargo capacity of only 880 pounds. That is why we went for a large sized Sequoia SUV at the time. The GX-460 is a fancy 4-runner with a V-8 engine. Current 4-Runners have V-6 engines and a 5000 pound towing capacity.

Next we have to decide which brake controller to install. We had the Lexus service advisor locate the brake harness under the dash. We have been happy with our Tekonsha Prodigy P2, but there seem to be some new choices available that we need to check out.

We look forward to taking several long trips (3-6 months) with our new Lexus and Airstream as we explore more of the US and Canada.

I thought you were selling your 23'? Did you buy a new Airstream as well?

blmitch5,

I have sold my 2007 Safari and as soon as the sale is completed I will be buying a new 2013/2014 23' Flying Cloud.

We expect to take first trip in June along the Oregon coast in June.

I am looking at a used Lexus GX-460 to replace my 1999 Suburban. Have you towed with it much? What are your thoughts about the vehicle now that you have had it for a while?

The new 4.6 supposedly has more horsepower than the old 4.7.

We are on a 1 month trip along the Oregon coast towing our new 2013 Flying Cloud 23D. It tows beautifully. The Lexus is much more refined than the Sequoia and has been flawless. I have not found a single thing wrong with the Lexus and have not been back to the dealer for any service.

My only gripe with the Lexus is that the electronics are complex and not always intuitive. That is illustrated by the fact that the owners manuals that came with it total around 1500 pages. The manual for the GPS is around 300 ages. The Quick start guide is over 100 pages. The manuals fill the glove box. Lexus should "hire" Apple to "optimize" the electronic interface.

Every automaker and after market supplier should hire Apple to make a better GUI...

We are also looking at t GX 460 to tow our new FC 23D. Any advice on the vehicle/TT combination would be greatly appreciated.
