K & N Air Filters on Diesel Engines

It is a good discussion to revisit though. A reminder for all those new diesel owners that the factory air filters are the best at what they were designed to do, filter air. The aftermarkets, like the K&N, are best at moving air, but filtering, not so much. Together with the ineptness some of us have in cleaning and oiling them, or should I say over oiling them, leads to all kinds of long term engine issues caused by excessive filter oil and grit passing into the engine.

A given turbo diesel climbing at 3000 rpm uses about twice the air that a normally aspirated gas engine uses at 5000 rpm according to the following calculator:

My ram runs 1400 rpm....never 3000....1100-1500....like my 14.7 liter E model cat...1100- 1550 rpm...don’t need any more rpm.....
