Trailer brakes work good when they work. I have had two incidents with smoked trailer brakes and plenty of other times when the controller didn't want to work right. I vote diesel, even if it is a GM, with the exhaust brake.

I 100% agree here. I just pulled our International '30 up and over Vail Pass on I-70 and then Red Mountain, Coal Bank, Molas, and then back again. On downhill sections I hardly ever used the brakes thanks to diesel downshifting and engine brake usage. It was awesome! In fact I wrote a story about how and why to use a truck - check it here!
