Jeep JK and an airstream 22' sport
25000 km, 21 states, 4 provinces and through the rocky mountain's. Averaged 15L/100km's without heavy winds. Jeep was prepared by CanAm RV in London Ontario, Jeep was equipped with a 3.6L, 6 speed manual and 3.73 gears. In all our travels from Ontario to Florida to California to BC and back home we had "0" problems towing.
Great SUV and a great trailer.

Nice looking rig!
You're lucky you have the 6spd manual...no overheating problems as compared to the automatics that need a transmission cooler to keep from frying the tranny without pulling anything.
What year is your Jeep? Have you had the left side head replaced yet?

Wow 15.68 MPG towing a trailer that is more than twice the manufacture’s limit for both weight (2000 lb) and frontal area (25 sqft) is quiet impressive. What’s the secret? I barely get 18 MPG mostly highway with my 2 door 2013 Rubicon auto not towing and 11mpg when I towed a little 1600lb T@B on flat land.

How much does the Sport weigh?
I've been wondering if it would be ok to use my TJ as a tow dolly...just for moving my trailer around on my property.
TJ is a 4-banger/stick...and the camper is 4-5000lbs, but there is a steep grade for the last 100' of driveway.

My buddy used to pull his '68 Tradewind AS with his 1940 Willy's Army Jeep. Not sure why he would have wanted to since he had a proper Chev TV set up at CanAm, but I know he pulled it several hundred miles on one trip. For just moving the AS around the yard I don't see why not! Low gear gives a lot of grunt and over-heating can't be a problem in a short haul

yeah, but if you do the math on this one, it doesn't have that much grunt. The 4-banger is not particularly powerful...it does have 4.11 gears, though. Seems to me I ran the numbers through Andy T's "thrust" formula, and came up with 2500lbs...in 4wheel-low.
I suppose that is probably enough, though.

It should work. Your Jeep/23 combo weighs 3,000 + 4,500 = 7,500lbs.
and has 120HP / 140 ft-lbs.
Do you recall our Nissan mini van/23 combo weighed 4,200 + 4,500 = 8,200lbs
and had 150HP / 180 ft-lbs.
Crunch the number and they are very close as far as power to weight.
Also realize the van only had 3:89 gears, cruised the highways at 100KLH and we climbed a lot on hills here in Ontario.

Kitchen table math aside, I say as an actual former Patriot owner, no way and no how would it safely haul anything over 1ton.

Wayne, have you actually had your Safari on a scale? I never have, so I don't know the actual weights...but I've always ball-parked it in that area.

Congratulations especially for the 25,000 KM on the road. I am envious. Our 2014 23' International Serenity has been in storage behind the barn and used but two weeks in the past year. Such is life. Once mama get's the bees and chickens cared for, and her new consultancy business in order perhaps we too will travel.
I am surprised frankly that your combination TV and TT actually work and especially well. Perhaps we are too conservative employing a Ford 250 / 6.7L diesel as a tow vehicle. Yes it is overkill but it sure feels "safe".....as safe as towing can be. Keeping up with traffic is easy regardless of terrain. The 3/4 ton truck with it's big diesel drives better withe the Airstream than w/o. It likes the stress.
Bravo for you guys in any case.

Sounds great. The 3.6l engine is rated at 285 hp, which is plenty of power.

11.7L/100km's @ 115km/h with out trailer
15L/100km's @ 103km/h with trailer and no wind
its the rpm and torque curve I think

Pentastar engine problems and valve failure persisted into the 2013 model year...I know from direct experience.

Yes Chuck we did have it on the scales a few times. With options (awning, air, laminate flooring, Ikea kitchen cabinets, etc it's dry weight is almost 4,000lbs. Loaded for travel it gets up to 4,500lbs.

I guess the tag is fairly accurate, then, at least for this year/model. (3800 empty/5800gvw). I know I've seen a lot of folks grumping about how their measured weights are very, very different from what is published.
What about the "actual" tongue weight? That seems to be where most are unpleasantly surprised.

I have a JKU Rubicon and about to buy a Sport 16". Are you towing with all stock parts or did you upgrade and buy anything to ensure an easier or better tow?

Contact Andrew Thomson at Can Am RV. They’ve set up a good number of these. Plus 10,000 other tow rigs.
