Smile It's About The Hemi

I'm Window Shopping for a tow vehicle for a 24' and possibly a 31' Airstream. Have been looking at the diesels but I'm wondering if anyone has pulled with the new Dodge Hemi, especially in the Durango. I think the Durango would do good with 24' but my real concern is the 31'

Thanks, Rod

I hesitated to responsd because we have such limited experience towing (less than 200 miles).

As you can see from my avatar, we have the Durango with the Hemi and a 28' International CCD.

This combo tows fine. I think you will probably get in trouble with the 31' in that the tongue weight will put your vehicle's GVWR over the #6600. I know that with ours, with the vehicle loaded and gassed and 4 passengers, we are at the max.

Also, be aware the Hemi gets REALLY BAD gas mileage without towing anything. We have almost 4000 miles now and get an average of 12.5 not towing. The dealer warned me of this when we bought it and said it will improve after 5000 miles. Hope so.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Smile It's about the Hemi

Thanks for the reply cosmotini ,

I'm still many months from a maiden voyage and just looking at options out there right now. I real interested in you mpg as you break it in because I thought Dodge advestises 17 mpg on the highway. My wife really likes the new Durangos and I've always wanted a diesel. I guess we could get a Durango to tow the 24' and a diesel to tow the 31'. Ya right, in my dreams.

Please keep me updated on your summer towing advinture.
Thanks, Rod

It has a "Pent"! that's all you need to know!

Pent chamber design (what most modern gas engines have) is a little better design for 2 valve heads.

This is really all about the marketing. Its like Angus beef......that's just a breed of cow. More then half the beef sold in the US if not more is Angus. Its really nothing special. Just marketing picked it up and coined the term to make you think it's better when it's really the same.

Here is a somewhat humourus thing about Hemi marketing ploy. Some migh find it a little abrasive.

Now that Cumins is a great pulling engine. If doge could build a Auto tranny to handle it you would be set. Get the manual if you can stand it.

Hi flyfshr,
the 31' is a '71 sov that my parents own. It's been setting about 10 years but my mom is always messing with it and the meeses ain't a chance with her. She hinting about me keeping care of it. We'll see what the future holds.

Hi 59toaster,
Haven't check the site out yet but I've heard that about the Hemi.

I've heard rumors the Dodge has a V10 diesel with a 1000 lbs of torque. Urban legend or maybe I'll wait a little while and see. Forget pulling an Airstream I'd could just hitch on to the house.

My current diesel is a manual so a manual tranny Cummins is an option for me and I am drooling over Idahosafari's new truck.
Thanks, Rod

Rod, is that urban legend up there with the Duramax/Alison combo in a Suburban?

V10 diesel...that's new on me.
1000 hp Cumins ...seen the videos of them running 12's. That's pretty close to 1000 hp.
There is a vid of a F350 PSD CREW CAB abosoulty handing a RX7 it's butt and running a 11.42 at 118 mph. I can guarnatee that's over a 1000 hp to get a 7200lb truck into the 11's.

here is the vid

That doesn't look like a urban legend to me.
