USED - great deal, good fit!

Just talked to a local GM dealer - they have a 2012 3/4 ton diesel that even has a bed slide. Prior owner sold it back to dealership after he became disabled. Have there been any huge improvements since 2012 in the diesel... and does the 2012 need DEF?

2011 was the first year for DEF in the Silverado.

Re:DEF

Having had a large moho with a Cummins 8.9 l ISL (450 hp, 1250 ft lbs of torque), which used DEF, I can attest the overall cost of fuel plus DEF is about 10% less than the same moho a few months earlier which did not use DEF.

As I understand the advantage in a DEF engine is in that there is less EGR and the engine is able to operate at a higher combustion temperature thus producing more power from each gallon of Diesel. DEF is available at nearly all truck stops now, and at a lower price than from the early days.

Was that a gas or diesel prototype? None of the comments on that youTube video were informative, just Ford bashing.

that 2012 sounds very good, You want to buy a diesel that uses DEF. Much better than the alternative emissions controls,

Unlike the Ford diesels which had a major change in 2011 model year and now a big update for 2015 have the GM Duramax/Allison combo remained pretty much unchanged other than the 2011 DEF introduction?

I noticed on GM the DEF fill is in the engine compartment while the Ford DEF fill is in the fuel tank fill compartment.

It seemed from the photos it was a gas fire. Diesel wouldn't burn like that, would it?

What is the rumor on the F250 Ecoboost? 5.0L? Probably not due for at least a couple of years I bet.

Paula, I have to tell you, the name of this tread reminds me of what my sister said as she stood at the edge of the roof of the barn.

"I'm going to jump. I mean it, I'm going to jump."

Correct for the GM trucks built early in the model year (IIRC prior to Aug 14) ... however, those built later and ordered with the camper mirrors do have the capability to fold electrically. Ours was one of the early ones and we are now upgrading to the electric folding camper mirrors ... newer mirrors are chrome covered and the early are black covers.

A huge thumbs up for the bed slide! Ours has been transferred over 3-4 different trucks.

We are happier with the 2015 Dura / Allison Chev than we were with the CTD Ram which we had for two years - that could be due to dealer / recalls on the Ram or just that the GM / Chev seems smoother and quieter. However, the new 2015 Ram that we tried out did have the coil rear springs ... it didn't seem to smooth the ride to us though.

We originally chose the Ram due to the excellent reputation of the CTD and it was the last year for no DEF required on the Rams. However, the sales folks forgot to tell us that the non-DEF engines had to more frequently inject raw diesel into the exhaust stream to clean the DPF .... lowering the fuel efficiency M/G. EPA got into the mix and there were numerous recalls which further hurt fuel economy and power. After almost two years, our Ram still did not have the front end recall completed due to no parts !!! YMMV
