my self i would love to get out asap but with one daughter in college (2nd yr NCSU) and another one in HS (2nd yr) my wife is not about to leave town for a long extended vacations for at least 4 yrs min.. so that why i figure we have at least 5 to 7 yrs to geterdone.

Mileage with that engine/tranny combo can hit 30 at 65 mph while not towing. It drops to 15-19 when towing, nearly the same with a 17' or a 26' trailer. It's the air drag, not the weight on flat ground.

FWIW, we plan to upgrade to a larger tow vehicle to tow the 26' trailer.

EDIT: Also regarding miles per "gallon", he may be referring to imperial gallon, which as I recall is something like 20% more than a US gallon. So 29 miles per imperial gallon works out to about 24 or so miles per US gallon.

powerful 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine producing 140kW (up 11 per cent) and a not too shabby 450Nm (up 12 per cent)

and yes the imperial gallon is 17% more than yours, but 24mpg towing a 5000lb trailer is still pretty impressive out of a toy truck !

The Overlander was about 5000lbs
I think with a WDH, i'd maybe go up to a sovereign 31ft, but then the trailer would be significantly heavier than the truck, stopping wise, i love the electric brakes, so much better than our sh@.* over run brakes. i have the Tekonsha Prodigy to keep on the right side of our laws. Towing an US built Airstream is doddle, which is partly because of the heavier hitch weight. European white box caravans and Euro finished Airstreams have the Axles in the centre, which reduces tongue weight but also reduces stability when towing.

just for your info, just did a 150 mile round trip this morning and returned 39.8mpg at average 65-70mph on dual carriage way and motorway.

No, don't take my comments wrong, I was not trying to say you were fabricating anything. It's just that when I saw your original figure of 430 ft-lbs, I thought, wait a minute, the Navarra 3.0V6 diesel only cranks out 405....how are they getting more out of the 2.5L four ? So now it makes sense....the figure you are quoting is newton-meters, and so 450 n-m pencils out to around 330 ft-lbs. Still very respectable for a 2.5L engine. They must be boosting it pretty high to get that. I wish we could get the diesels here in north america in the Frontier. I like my 4.0L gas V6, but I would love to have that 3.0 diesel.

Makes sense now, and yes your mileage consumption sounds really favorable.

i havc wondered about tongue weight of European trailers vs US trailers and not using WD style hitch set up. So it seem the trailer axles are a bit further back reducing weight on tongue and I see comments that can cause the towing unit to become more unstable while putting more weight on the trailer. What has been your experience with that??

When you say "our sh@3. overrun brakes, are you talking about the brake system i see on larger boat trailer that work when you step on car brakes it causes the boat trailer to slide forward pushing brake fluid out to brake shoes on axles slowing the trailer as well..

I have used that type of system and can tell you it will cause your butt to tighten up a bit when you first hit the brakes and you keep goooiinnggg for a bit then it kinda hooks up and slows down.. dammmmm....

I figured the way to go was to jam the brakes on and then sort let up a bit helped to reduce the lag a bit.. but i see the elec brakes on most larger trailers is the bomb for sure..

I am still impressed with your 39 mpIg at 65-70mph.. wish we could get your truck with our WD and elec brake system.. match made in heaven..

Wait and see what happens. I am concerned about fuel prices. I have NEVER seen the diesel/gas gap higher than it is right now in my area. Today I saw it $0.66 higher than regular! I notice as I used to own a 2010 TDi Jetta Sportwagen and now drive an F150 or scooter depending on weather and mood. That is a huge difference to me. Consider 14mpg city (my F150) 1000 miles@3.35 gal = $239 versus 21mpg city (diesel Jeep GC) 1000 miles@4.01 gal = $191. You save $48 in city driving per 1000 miles. Now consider the diesel upcharge of around $4000 compared to regular Grand Ch. and you have to drive about 83,000 to make the difference, right? The difference is even greater if you considered buying a used CPO F150 or something with low miles as they don't even cost what the gas Grand Cherokee costs- at least in XLT version.
