I disagree, but that's just my professional opinion. 1/2 ton market offerings has changed a lot in past few years.

Ok but why do you disagree and what makes it a professional opinion?
I'd buy the Chevy 6.2 8 speed & both Ford EBs & both the Ram ED & Hemi to tow a TT over the 5.3 & 5.0. Not that they won't do it as they certainly can.

I wonder how many threads like this have been here in the 4+ years that I have been a member? We should have a template that simply says "There is no one right answer" or "YMMV" and stamp it on the original question. It always boils down to " I have tried X, Y, and Z or my friend has owned A, B, and C, but I like what I have now". Choices are one of things that makes America great!

I have been a GM factory rep for 33 years, and before I spent my money on my truck, I towed with 2500 gas and diesel and 1500 6.2. I chose to buy the 6.2 1500 has as it is the most pleasant overall towing machine I have ever experienced. It is more than capable of handling my 30' classic in every aspect.

GM or Ford
Either truck will do the work of towing. SAVE your self some money, if you don't use and need 4-wheel drive get 2-wheel drive with limited slip differential, get a towing package and specify rear gear between 3.7 and 4.1....this will work well, beyond that select the cab with all the amenities that you want and go with the brand that warms your heart, after all, the purpose of all this is to enjoy.

That's the rumor, but I have no first hand knowledge, and if I did, I really couldn't say. I saw the same internet spy photo you all did. The new truck is due in about 12 months.

Rich you didn't disagree with what I said you confirmed it. As a factory rep you wouldn't choose a 5.0/5.3 for OPs goals either.. You would choose the 6.2.
Like to hear that GM may offer a 1500 diesel. And glad to hear Ram's is being produced & coming back.

My truck is dedicated to towing my Airstream and other times when a truck is necessary. Since it is not a daily driver, I use a Chevy 2500HD 6.0 gasser with a 4:10 rear end. I would have gone with a 1500 / 150 if I needed it to do double duty as a daily driver. 2500HD trucks are a pain as a daily driver. Turning radius is a big circle. Parking it in some parking lots is a real pain.

I am going to weigh in again here. Disclaimer: I have never owned a Ford or FCA product and never plan to. But, even with the GM 6.2 the largest fuel tank available in a 1/2 ton GM is 26 gallons. With certain configurations in the Ford you can get a 36 in a 1/2 ton. There have been a few rumors that GM may change that in the next generation, but??
You may be perfectly satisfied with a 26 gallon tank; certainly plenty of users are. I was not, I always found myself carrying extra gas.

Vern, I disagreed with your overarching "1/2 ton statement, And actually, the gen 5, 5.3l maxtow may be really good with OP's 23fb. I'd have to study up on the weights and test pull, if I could. I got a 6.2 because I have a 9k 30' classic. Not to mention the toys on the bed.

As mentioned above, get the maximum trailering package (a step up from the heavy towing package) if you want to be really satisfied.
I've had both the 6.2L and the 5.3L with the GM max trailering package. Both were good engines, but I prefer the 5.3 L, which has plenty of pull power.

After evaluating several vehicles ford, chev, dodge, gmc we deceided on a 2017 gmc 1500 5.3 with 3.42 rear axle 8 speed with max trailering package.
Great combination
