Sad for us "gear grinders" that the only manual transmission now available in a pickup is in a Dodge Ram 2500/3500 - and only on the Cummins Turbodiesel. GM did away with manuals years ago, but I was surprised to see Ford go "full-automatic"... :-(

I much prefer manual transmissions especially for small engines with no torque. Gas engines worked much better with manual transmissions. You use to be able to get all the HP out of a gas engine and now you have to wait for the automatic transmission to shift and then it never shifts when you want it to. I think automatics transmissions are one thing that made diesels so popular. With a diesel you really only need one gear because the torque curve is so flat.

I agree. Physics are physics. My little 4.2L f150 would have a very difficult time with the the Airstream if not of the 5 speed manual. Automatics just never seemed to be in the right gear.
When I went to replace my old diesel 3/4 ton I was set on a low mileage Dodge diesel stick! I ran across a deal I could not refuse on a new 6.L gas with 6 speed automatic. I was very surprised with it when I hooked up the Airstream. It is pretty darn smart about keeping me on the torque curve. The integrated engine and tranny controller software, fuel injection and 6 speeds shift right when they should. It even adjusts its shift pattern depending on if I am going up or down hill, braking or accelerating. It downshifts when it should and locks the torque converter for maximum engine braking. I am happy with it.
I still love driving the stick and miss the smell of diesel fuel

Great video, that was fun!
I'll be thinking about that tonight on the way home as I'm shifting through the gears in my classic Miata. I still prefer a manual for our fun cars, but we had to go with an automatic for the TV. The cars we wanted don't even come with manuals. In fact we were looking at a smaller Mazda crossover before we settled on the Flex, and getting a manual was practically a special order! Sad

Neat time capsule video. Automatics have gotten so good lately I can certainly see why manuals are on their way out. The ZF 8 speed in my Audi is Jedi like in how it selects the correct gear. Even up a hill under load the thing finds the perfect gear, shifts amazingly fast (like fine clockwork) and barely eases off the power while doing so....amazing.
