Question Gas tank on 2010 F-150

I just ordered (factory build) a 2010 F-150 4WD 5.4L XLT SuperCrew; short-bed with max trailer tow pkg. and rearview camera. When the fleet mgr. checked, he couldn't find any indication that it was an available option on any model except a 2WD. Yet there are forum members (Farmer Dan) who did get - w/out even ordering it - a 36 gal tank(!). I believe the option no. is 655, but my dealer couldn't find a way to add it to the build form. Page 402 of the owner's manual refers to it as an option on the on the SuperCrew shortbed. Anyone know of a way to order it? My dealer wants to help, and will amend the build order, but he seems stumped at this point. Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
Jerry

Might be a California thing... You guys have your own rules that the car companies have to play by... No real idea. Just speculation... If this prove to be true, maybe you could take delivery outside CA through a different dealer in neighboring state. If you do not have any luck, and you're curious, drop me a PM and I'd be happy to check if its an option back here. We're from MN. Let me know if I can help. All the best!

hi jerry

sure it's available with 4x4 but...

which wheelbase did u order?

as i recall the larger fuel tanks are only available with longer wheelbase (>156) combinations...

the 'short bed' term is confusing now because they offer 3 bed lengths on the 150s----5.5, 6.5, 8 ft...

did you order the 5.5 ft?

THAT's a really small truck bed...

the "supercrew" cabin is NOT available with the "long bed" but can be had with 5.5 OR 6.5

6.5 will get the wheel base >156, and i think that's where the larger fuel tank option is available...

with the shortest cabins, one may need to order the 8 ft bed to reach the 156/157 wheel base.

cheers

The shorter the truck the shorter the fuel tank. My long bed(s) had/have a 38 gal tank, short bed was in the 20s.

Get a longer bed you will be happy for it. More positive control over the trailer and more place to put stuff when traveling.

36 gal F-150 tank

Thanks, guys.
Yeah, I thought the short bed might be the reason. But I think Farmer Dan has a short bed SCREW. If he has the 6.5' bed, then I guess that's the end of the discussion.
On a separate note, I realize the 5.5' bed is small, but I wanted to keep the overall length down as much as I could. Actually, with the SCREW, the rear cab space compensates for the 12" missing from the actual truck bed (most of the time, it's just Susan and me; no rear passengers). After camping for 3 years with the Bambi and the Dodge Dakota (6.5' bed), I don't think we'll have any gear storage problem, based on our needs. I'm also considering a Flip-Pac camper shell for any off-road bivouacs. Off-road camping is pretty common in Anza-Borrego and Death Valley, where we do a fair amount of our streamin'. The Flip-Pac will also come in handy for friends who join us. Again, thanks for your input. I can live without the 36 gal tank if it means a short bed is incompatible.

Cheers,
Jerry

sure jerry that makes sense in terms of truck,

even the supercab (not crew) is pretty good space for 2 people (lots of room behind the seats)

the issue is SPACE for the fuel tank and whatever combo picked needs to get up to the 156-157 wheel base...

the issue is ROOM between the frame CROSS members for the longer tank.

for those off road excursions,

u might wanna strap on a nato rack for old school jerrycans for extra petrol...

those look cool when offroading, they're already named 4 you...

red=gas, yellow=diesel, blue=drinking water

(i don't know what color is coded for waste water or beer )

cheers

My dad once told be about a time in France at the end of World War II when some guys came back with a jerrycan filled with Champagne. He didn't mention the color of the jerrycan, though.

Short bed & 36 gal tank

Well, as Homer Simpson would say: "Doh!!!". Farmer Dan's F-150 has the 6.5' bed, which pretty much ends the mystery. Oh well, I'm still happy with the truck build. Short enough not to be a parking nightmare in the driveway next to the Bambi, but still enough room for us!

Cheers,
Jerry

flmgrip mentioned the Transfer Flow, and that is what we have; now not exactly the same as your request - as we an F250 and it is diesel. Our total capacity is 80 gallons, and when traveling long distances or anywhere out west (like in the four corners area) where fuel is a little less common, it is a real plus and really comforting. I don't know if this is even an option for gas!?!

We obviously sacrificed space in the bed (roughly 2 feet I'd guess), and while real estate is important, there weren't any real good options for us getting past a 30 gallon capacity (our old Excursion was great - it had a 45 gallon capacity - really perfect!).

Good luck, although I'm starting to think the jerry can with champagne sounds like a good Plan B!

I have a super crew with 5.5 bed and it came with the 36 gallon tank. I read somewhere the 4x4s come with the 36 gallon tank except regular cab versions. It wasn't on the window sticker either.

Wow, so there's hope for the 36 gal tank after all! I guess I'll just wait to see the result when my truck comes in. The larger tank will just be a plus! Thanks, Jeff!

Cheers,
Jerry

36 gallon tank

After combing the F150 forums, I was pointed to the Ford Canada website, which suggests that all Super Crew 4x4's, whether long or short bed, have a 36 gal tank. Here's the link: Ford F-150 Trucks: Ford Canada

I hope that's accurate, and applies in the US.
