There is plenty of talk about dropping the badge engineering on GMC's and paring down the line to avoid duplication with Chevy. Chrysler is dropping Dodge Caravans and the only van will be the Chrysler T&C. Over 90% of the Chrysler dealers now sell Jeep, Ram, Chrysler and Dodge under one roof.

Denis,

If GM does that then maybe they should either shutter the whole GMC division or make it exclusively for high-end (2 ton & above) commercial vehicles. When GM was going through its bankruptcy contortions and they announced that they would be killing off Hummer and Saturn, I wondered about keeping the GMC division. In reconsidering my thoughts, I now suspect that were they to kill off the lower end of GMC's line-up the heavier trucks, buses, and what have you couldn't support the costs of the division. Since Chevy and GMC are equally storied, perhaps they should kill off Chevy trucks and bring all the trucks under the GMC division and let Chevy focus on cars.

When test driving a Sierra 2500HD Denali Duramax recently, the salesperson told me that of 10 trucks that come out of the Texas plant, 7 are Chevys and 3 are GMCs, the vehicles are exactly the same except that the GMCs for some reason hold their resale value better. All I really know is that given the number of folks who feel strongly about both brands, this has marketing nightmare written all over it. I'm glad that I don't work for GM's marketing department on this one.

Cheers,
Rion

Thanks Joe,

I knew I remembered that view. I was there several years ago. I towed, no, got pushed down the hill by, a 21 ft Bigfoot. Quite an imposing downslope.

I gotta stop watching old Twilight Zone episodes

If you look at the front of the 'Burb, it looks like Bigfoot is trying to crawl across the hood onto the top of the truck. 'Course, it could just be a tree in the background, or is it?

We were just up in the Bighorn National Forest from Ranchester and Dayton about three weeks ago when we shot this picture from a pull-out along US14. Dayton, Ranchestrer, and Sheridan can all be seen from this vantage point. It looks similar to Joe's photo.

Hardly seems likely

GM is spending $331 million in upgrades and expansion at the Arlington Texas plant that makes Suburbans...

GM to Invest $331 Million, Add 110 Jobs in Arlington, Tex.

Our two girls have towed Lucy over 80,000 miles. Our Suburbans have done us well. I would hate to see them go away.

I tried to find the exact location by dumping the GPX data from the GPS... as luck would have it, a large chunk of travel log is missing

Brian's picture is on the east side of the mountains looking east. I'm think yours is on the west side looking west. However, looking at Google maps, Hwy 14 splits in the middle of the NF. We took the northern branch which goes to Bighorn lake, Lovell , Powell and then to Cody. I'm guessing your picture was taken on the big winding section coming down that side. However, maybe you went the other way.

Ken,

For some reason, heading there and back, the GPS log is blanked out, from the east edge of YNP, to somewhere near Rushmore NM. ??
Most of the iPhone pics have no EXIF data, either... but I did find one
here's the pushpin:

44.8281666667,-107.3285000000 - Google Maps

Trans temp was the only thing I kept an eye on... 8.1/2500 is a workhorse, I can't imagine a diesel could do any better

PS- check out the street image for that location!! There's an AIRSTREAM on that pullout!!

I think they may have GPS blocked out for a large portion of Wyoming, so that no one can find Cheney.

Now, the real challenge, find out whose Airstream that is..

The specs I found on the 8.1 Liter Chevy engine shows a torque rating of 455 @ 3,200 RPM.

My Duramax is currently making about 700 Ft lbs. at 3100 RPM.

The 8.1 L is a great gas engine, but when it comes to pure grunt towing power, nothing beats a Diesel, except maybe a bigger Diesel.
