Ford station wagon gets 5,000lb Tow Rating

The Ford Mondeo station wagon gets a 5,000lb Tow Rating and was awarded the 2008 Tow vehicle of the year award in Europe.

In testing it was reported to be very stable, with crisp steering and braking with the TT in tow.

Two engines are available. A 2L diesel and a 2.5L gasser.

Amazingly they were not using a WDH and use only a basic "squeeze the ball" type sway control.

What I learned from the Top Gear episode was that in England at least they tow slowly.

In their performance test program on the track they reach 80MPH where they reported the combination as very stable. Not bad for the TT being a Box and the Ford engines being so small.

Isn't this car using the same platform and engines of some of the current Volvos? I wonder if they'll try it on the North American market. I think previous versions didn't fare well here.

Winner in the 25000-32000 pound sterling class?
That's like, gulp, around $49500 to nearly Sixty Five Thousand Dollars for a Ford wagon.

I like wagons, but yowza.

Unfort, if you are talking Airstreams, or more specifically newer Airstreams (non-vintage), this could tow one model, the 16' and still be within the tow rating (subtracting, fuel, passengers and cargo from the 5000lb rating). I was going to say 19' too, but after you take into account the fuel, passengers and cargo thing, you could exceed the 5k pretty quickly since the 19 footers are around 4500lbs wet.

For the rest of us with newer, non-vintage Airstreams over 16', we're still gonna have to look for alternates.
