Ford F-150 EcoBoost review

Review of the Ford F-150 with EcoBoost V6 engine....

Interesting quick review of the Ford F-150 truck configured with the V6 EcoBoost engine from AutoGuide.com.

"Diesel-Like Torque" - this machine is made to tow and until a F-150 or 1500 is availiable with a diesel engine, the best in class engine\vehicle for towing in my opinion that is currently out there....

Got a Airstream 25FB or smaller? This would be the vehicle for ya if you need a new Tow Vehicle and do not require Diesel - 27FB or larger or love your oil burners - then I would go Super Duty (F-250\350 2500\3500) just so I have enough payload to load up the tow vehicle and Airstream and still have a comfortable margin within the performance envelope...

A few key points everyone has been asking about are answered in the article above, such as how much more does the EcoBoost cost over the 5.0 V8, what type of fuel do you need to feed it, etc.

Big thing I want to point out - the Ford EcoBoost V6 engine generates around 90 percent of its torque at just 1700 rpm and that peak torque is available all the way through 5500 rpmessentially, the normal operating range of most pickups in daily use. For comparison’s sake, the Ford 5.0-liter makes its maximum 380 lb-ft at 4250 rpm and the big 6.2-liter makes 434 lb-ft at 4500, while Chevy’s 5.3 Vortech V8 delivers 338 lb-ft at 4400 rpm and Ram’s all-conquering Hemi puts out 407 lb-ft at 4000 revs.

Now, I hope everyone understands why I feel so strongly about this engine, until we get a V6 Turbo Diesel (like my beloved Toureg TDI) this is as close to diesel performance we can currently achieve as packaged in a F-150\1500 class truck!

I really like mine, and so does my co-pilot, Leslyn.

I test drove a new F150 with the EcoBoost engine $750 option towing a 6500# trailer at a local Ford dealer. I can say I was extremely impressed with the power and stability of this F150. From the dealer I got onto a freeway and had an immediate uphill stretch of road. I was amazed when I looked at the speedometer and I was going 70 MPH in a very short distance up the hill. Stopping power is also excellent. The down side of the F150 with EcoBoost is the down sized gas tank that has a 26 gal. capacity instead of the 36 gal. capacity tank on the other F150 trucks with different engines.

My tow vehicle is a 2007 F250SD Crew Cab with the 6.0L Diesel, so I was amazed at this small gas powered engine having so much torque.

Bill Fisher has one - he towed his 28' CCD out to the Restoration Rally in ABQ and said the performance towing was great. The truck had power to spare even on grades. Fuel economy towing was 10 - however the truck only had a couple of thousand miles on it.

My F150 Ecoboost gives me about 17mpg around town, 20mpg on highway. When pulling a 6000# horse trailer (with a couple of horses in it) I get 11.5mpg. All that and I only have 2000 miles on it. It's much better than the 5.4L I used to have. Torgue is great, mileage, and stability, too. In a race it will beat my 6.7L Dodge 3500 dually hands down.

If they make a V8 ecoboost it would rival the diesels, especially since they put all the smog junk on them (EGR,DPF).

The real question is whether it will outlast the 2002 F150 5.4L I traded in, that lasted 240,000 miles and was still ticking fine.

My 6.7 is getting 15 towing at 70-75 with a 30' Classic - but we paid more for our Diesel beasts - for a F-150, that EcoBoost is the engine to beat!

John,

What weight is the F150 rated for when equipped with the Eco-Boost V6?

I mean, is there a current Ford pick-up that will use less dollars of fuel per mile (diesel or gas) when NOT towing? I'm assuming that in terms of pulling power, most, if not all AS TT owners could use the F150 EcoBoost V6 if they chose to.

Just returned from our 1st weekend trip with our new 20' Flying Cloud, pulled by Ecoboost. Hitched with Equalizer. 14 + mpg hitched (less than 500 miles on truck). I am getting 26 + mpg on highway unattached.
Plenty of power, no obvious sway. Looking forward to a lot of great traveling with this setup!

Got My Ecoboost

Last Friday I was returning from an out of town trip in my 2001 F-150 SuperCrew Lariat Oxford White with 120K on it, I called the wife and told her the truck was losing power and I was concerned that I may not be able to pull our 25' Safari to evacuate in case of a Hurricane. Her reply was go buy any new truck you want it is fathers day. So I drove directly to the Ford dealer and purchased an Oxford White F-150 Lariat Ecoboost. What a truck, power to spare, great ride, and great fuel economy. The truck in going to Ford tomorrow to add the Ford brake controller, I have added Weather Tech mud flaps, Debo step ( I like the Debo step better than Fords), and waiting for my Raptor stainless steel step bars.

Thanks to all those who posted information about the Ecoboost made my decision very easy.

Jim

So far the mileage figures vary considerably. It seems like they drop a lot when towing and if 11.5 (post #6) is what you get with a 6,000 lb. trailer, that's about the same as our Tundra. The non-towing mileage is substantially higher though. Does this mean the Ecoboost is straining when towing? With the smaller gas tank (same as the Tundra) that mileage figure means gas every 200-250 miles.

Our truck has a ways to go yet, but we are interested in how this works out. I would expect GM will be out with something like this soon. The Tundra is due for an updated model too.

Have you seen the NASCAR tow?
YouTube - ‪2011 Ford F-150 Ecoboost Torture Test - 24 Hours of NASCAR Track Testing‬‏

I would have to think that Ford forgot to mention the team of engineers and techs who were maintaing the engine for these commercials. I also wonder if more than one engine was pulled and the commercial was about the best or the survivor. I now own one so time will tell.

Wow . . .

Do you think you can ask your wife if I can get one too?

Ford has "put a spell on me" and I'm in some kind of F150 EcoBoost trance . . . I keep trying to tell myself that, "my truck is paid for, it can pull the trailer just fine . . . "

Jim, can the dealer install the integrated brake controller, complete with tying it into the dashboard display? I'm curious because GM says in no uncertain terms that a dealer can't install their integrated controller post-factory...
