There will be a relationship. Probably as a percentage. Mine is off by approximately 3/4-gl at 60 mph. Yes, it will take several thousand miles and recording every drop of fuel used against actual miles. Single tanks are like single highs or lows. Rather meaningless.

The average in my 2004 Dodge the past 26k miles is now 22.48 mpg for all miles (no heavy towing [above 6k lbs]).
The average is what counts if we believe a vehicle to possess higher FE than another.

I'm with you. Sure after driving for hours i don't notice the trailer anymore. But when I disconnect and drive around I sure notice it isn't there.

After towing all day, unhitch and the truck feels like a sports car—it leaps off the line.

Jason, haven't seen your posts for quite a while. Taking care of the twins all the time?

Of course it is a snap-shot from the on board computer did you think it was a photo shopped picture?. You may know it is not accurate or comprehensive but I don't think you can speak for all, don't care as it is beating the heck out of my old 5.4 and making me smile.

Yep been crazy, They are a year and a half now, running and getting into everything. We are planing a trip to the Oregon Coast around seaside. Wife is flying to Portland and i'm braving 2-3 days out and 2-3 days back with the four kids by myself.

For anyone interested, I'll post some real world MPGs on pulling a 25' International from Colorado to Lake Tahoe starting Saturday the 30th. Currently, I'm getting about 17 in the city and 20 on the highway.

There is a SUPER article in the latest Truck Trend magazine compairing all of the Ford F-150 gas engines including tests. The Eco-Boost V-6 beat everything including the new 6.2 V-8 in the Harley Davidson version. The Eco-Boost with the 3.73 rear end did the 0-60 in 6.2 and the 1/4 in 14.8/95 mph. VERY impressive, with a combo mileage of 17.2 including the drag racing. If I was in the market for a new truck, I would definately look at the new Ford Eco-Boost.

Coming in late to this party. But I've been following this thread from the start.

I thought it interesting that John bought a new F350 and started a thread on the 150 Eco-Boost. Actually I had read many of Scheck's posts from when he was originally looking for a new truck...

We tow a '90 Excella 25 with a '03 F250 CC 7.3 diesel. We recently took it across country and back with no truck problems. It gets a decent 14 or so mpg towing with many goodies loaded up. With 4 vehicles and 2 people, the F250 gets left in the driveway for around town trips.

JScheck's decision to get the F350 made me think about that as an alternative to the new 6.7 F250 (same engine). But since we don't drive the 250 much except for towing, I'm hesitant to replace it with another larger truck - thus the rational for a slightly smaller (wt. length, height) F150. Good thread on 250 vs 350 over on TheDieselStop.

As one who has followed the forums for 10 years there is clear preference for 250 size trucks when towing the 25 foot and up coaches. And I had a short experience towing my coach with an Expedition 4.6L - definitely the tail wagging the dog. Agree that it can be done on occasion. And the newer 150's are bigger & heavier than 10 yrs ago.

So I don't have a REAL question here but just to say that probably many others might be in the same boat.....

I've posted some of this before, and received some thoughts via PM, but maybe I can say it better this time:

The Eco-Boost mpg drops very quickly when towing, much more than V8's, thus this says to me the efficiency of this engine is tested severely by typical Airstream towing. It may mean the engine suffers excessive wear when towing even though it can do it. My guess is this engine will not last as long if you do a lot of towing, and will not last as long as a big V8, but it may last a lot longer than you will own it.

The irony is it appears to get much better gas mileage when not towing making the Ford a better choice for a daily driver. If you can use it often, that is a much more efficient choice because owning a big engine truck just for towing, or using it and buying lots and lots of gas are not good choices if efficiency and cost are important criteria. So, this can make the Ford a very good choice.

2nd, if you only use a truck for towing, or rarely use it for non-towing, the Ford does not appear to get better mileage towing than other vehicles with big V8's, and maybe the Ford is not a good choice in that case if the Ford wears faster, or you believe it to be untested over time.

3rd, Ford has put out some bad vehicles in the recent past because they did not test them sufficiently. Thus, it seems best to wait a few years before buying this truck if they haven't learned their lesson.

So, I hope this thread keeps going for years so we can follow the progress of how this truck holds up. I expect we will see other turbocharged trucks very soon and the comparisons will be interesting.

The only "bad" vehicle that Ford has produced was the 6.0 diesel. The F-150 continues to be the longest running most popular vehicle in history for the past 18 years. There is a reason for that and it is a combination of daily use and towing/hauling loads. The dyno pulls for the Eco-Boose actually were higher at 385 rear HP than the flywheer claims of 365 hp. With twin turbos, I doubt the engine will suffer much with a 3.73 rear and 344 lbs of torque when towing. As far as durability goes, you could say what you will on vertually every year an engine comes out since they change from your to year regardless of having the same displacements. Between the 6 speed Torque Shift tranny and all of the new Ford goodies, it would be a hard combo to beat no matter the size of the AS.

Hi Gene...I enjoy following your annual trip posts...still (and maybe forever) a wanabee

Just by coincidence I just received a "glossy" Ford promo magazine...actually the magazine was put together quite well...must have cost some $$$ to produce/print/mail.

Anyway, they cited a "test" they performed on an eco boost truck engine taken at random off the production line...then installed in a F-150. I won't list ALL they put the engine through...but it was impressive...including a "lab" run simulating 150K miles before they placed in the F-150. A couple of the in truck tests...24 hour full speed run at race track...w/11,000lb+ trailer in tow...and running the Baja 1000...in any case...at the end of their pretty impressive "work out" they did a public disassembly of the engine at the Detroit auto show and ALL specs were within "new" parameters.

Perhaps they are aware of their past problems?

All this FYI...I still drool over a 3500 GMC Duramax/Allison CC SRW...but I agree that there will be more turbo boost engine in trucks in the future.

How about the Explorer, not only for the tire problems but the bad ratings as an off road vehicle, or the flaming cruise control problem.

Durability? Yes, engines are tweaked and they are changed. This is a relatively new engine/turbo combination and not an annual tweaking.

I know Ford sells a lot of trucks. Whether those choices are made rationally is a different question. A lot of twinkies and french fries are sold, but are they good products?

I'd be curious to know what Fords mpg was while they were doing their 24 hour torture test towing. I know a few folks that have a 2011 Ford F250 w/6.2L, 3.73 rear,6.5' bed,(one Crew Cab the other SuperCab) 4WD towing AS's(25 Safari, 28 Int'l). They are both getting between 9-11 mpg towing.
I'm in the market for a new truck and I'm looking at the 2012's in 4wd, Crew cab, 6.5' bed. Currently looking at the F150 Eco Boost, F250 6.2L or Ram 2500 with HO Cummins.
I dont want to deal with urea or the Ford 6.7 diesel yet.
In the fall I'll have to get serious. If the new F150 specs are true then it may get more consideration.

Bluetec fluid (urea) is absolutely non-painful. And the use eliminates other problems thereby. Commercial truck operators report a range of mpg, but none that I read of (Dodge) have any problem (in chassis cab trucks). Now, buying a Ford is undoubtedly problematic when it comes to new motors the past ten years.

Oh, I don't know, Cummins has had it's issues too. Just ask those Cummins owners in 2008 about plugged "soot bags". Not to mention cracked exhaust manifolds, auto tranny problems, head bolt failure, injector pumps crashing, etc. The one Ford engine that has and will have problems until they are all gone is the 6.0. That problem engine has sold more Dodges and Chevy's than all of the commercials put together. Just think if the Ford 6.0 was as reliable and trouble free as the 7.3, no telling. As far as the Explorer is concerned, I never thought of it as any kind of serious tow vehicle any more than I think of it as a serious off-road vehicle either.

Many look at the Flex with the powerful V6 engine as a vehicle with more potential than the Explorer.
