??? Ford Explorer as a TV ????

I never see any discussion here regarding the Explorer. Several years ago a friend and I went to rent a U-haul trailer using his Explorer. He was turned down flat. They would NOT rent anything to be towed with the Explorer. We went back and got my truck to complete our mission. Anyone have any idea what the issue is with the Explorer ??? Is it just a U-Haul thing ???? I can't recall seeing any discussion here on the forum about their tow worthiness. Just thinking out loud here and wonder what it could be.

Thanks all,

From what I have read the factory stock older Explorers did not make for a stable TV. Short wheelbase, over sized lame tires on narrow rims, narrow leaf spring positioning, high center of gravity, etc. They were prone to getting into accidents especially when used as a TV.

When we owned a 1996 21' Sovereign, we towed it with a 1997 Explorer all over the USA probably for a total of about 15,000 miles. It worked hard in the Rockies but never failed to pull. We had no problems with the Explorer. It was factory equipped with towing equipment which worked very well.

Don't have any experience with any newer Explorers so can't comment on them.
