Ford Expedition EL

I have a 2010 Ford Expedition EL. The engine is the Triton 5.4L V8 with 3.73 gear ratio. The wheelbase is 131 inches. The HD towing setup allows for about 850 pounds of hitch weight with a weight distribution system. Maximum towing is about 8300 pounds. How comfortable should I feel towing a Safari 25fb or 27fb? Thank you in advance.

I'm sure you will do well with that setup, particularly with a good hitch. While not the same . . . I towed a car on a flatbed trailer (5600 lb total weight) with a '07 standard wheelbase Expedition and it was like it wasn't even back there.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

First off, welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.

I think that you will be OK with that rig. Research and invest in a quality weight distribution/sway control hitch and trailer brake controller. If your Expedition doesn't have, you're really going to need a transmission fluid cooler. We have a 2005 25FB. Ready to camp, it weighs 7400#.

I have a 2005 F-150 with the same engine and gear ratio pulling a Safari 25SS with Equil-i-zer brand hitch. It's a great match and a pleasure to drive this combination. In fact, I feel the F-150 controls the trailer better than my previous 3/4 ton Ford Excursion.

The 2010 Expedition EL probably has the 6-speed transmission which would be a big advantage over my 4-speed. I'd feel comfortable pulling the 25FB. The 27FB is only 400 pounds heavier and has a little lower tongue weight so it probably wouldn't feel much different. Hope that helps.

I/we have a 2003 Expedition and tow have towed our 25' Classic many miles.....no problems with one exception....had to buy a new transmission (was an overhaul but seemed to have replaced a lot of things) but that is my/our fault. I think that it (transmission) got hot going over a pass not recommended for trailers in CA.

The Expedition we have does not have the 3-valves or the six-speed transmission. As I wrote, it does well for us. We only have a Reese hitch set-up with the bars and yet there is no sway that the Expedition does not settle down Tow vehicle is "the boss".

Originally, we were planning to tow with our 2000 Jeep GC BUT had to do "crazy Ivans" to see behind and the trailer was really in control.

You are also better off than we as you have the extra length of the tow vehicle... EL

Do not worry, get a good sway control hitch, and enjoy. I do not think a Hensley is a necessity

I tow a 31' Sovereign with my 2007 Expedition EL 4 x 4. I stay on relatively flat land here in the Midwest, so I haven't had any issues as of yet. I use my vehicle a heck of a lot more than I use my trailer, so comfort is a priority for me. I love it. I feel like I'm in charge of the trailer, not it me. I've towed trailers for lots of years (maybe 25) and the Expedition is my favorite vehicle so far.
