Ford EcoBoost being investigated

Listen, I am a Ford fan so don't think I am crapping on Ford, but...they do have a problem with their Ecoboost.

It appears to be the same-old same-old. There's been a TSB for this fix for a while (TSB 12-11-15) and I've seen reference to a different TSB (12-10-19) and new production uses a different intercooler than the original ones.

very timely post!

i had this happen to me last fall while towing. it never happened again and when i reported this during service my dealer told me, "sorry, there is no hard fault code in the computer so ford won't let us do the 'fix' in the service bulletin". i called ford and just got a letter from them asking me to call them to discuss my issue. i hope they address the oversized 2" receiver box too. it is tapered and excessively loose. i don't need the stinger to wiggle!

Don't know if related but last year one "power loss" discovery was related to water/moisture getting into intake on turbo.

Hi from AZ. . . this problem / issue has been discussed here at length in a couple of Eco-Boost/ F150 threads. It's happened to me twice, both incidents in very high moisture situations (driving rain storm & heavy fog) Same response from dealer, no fault code in computer, no help. I took in the TSB # & they still haven't done the TSB. It's pretty annoying. Maybe NTSB can force the issue. Regards, Craig

yes, that is what i believe it is. the dealers suggestion that i drive around with the trailer until i can duplicate the problem, was rather unreasonable. i told them i'd be sending a letter to them and ford to put them "on notice" it is likely to be an ugly situation if it happens on a major highway.

yes, with the gov't investigating i think i'll be getting a different answer now.

I don't have an EcoBoost Ford but this is a known issue with the earlier production units. Have you tried a different dealer? The difference between dealers is sometimes simply unbelievable! My understanding is that the fix is out there waiting... Perhaps a call to Ford corporate?

I recently had a simple little problem with my F-150's heated/cooled seats. I knew what the problem had to be (I do this for a living!), I described the situation in enough detail that there would be no problem duplicating the complaint and I took the truck in for warranty (Ford extended) repair. Dealer promptly informed me that "we can't duplicate the problem.... ". Ready for this (remember I run an auto repair shop) I asked for an opportunity to demonstrate the issue. The "shop foreman" came outside with me and I handed him my copy of the carefully worded repair order and asked him to turn the drivers side seat heater on. About 30 seconds later when the blower for passenger side seat turned on (as was reported to be the issue in the repair order he was holding) I asked him if that was normal? He said "wow, look at that!. Well to cut to the end of the story, after waiting for the dealer to "communicate with Ford "engineers"" for more than one month, after they returned zero of my phone calls, after not being willing to wave the deductible for the second upcoming visit even though they failed miserably to follow simple directions I called another dealer. The second dealer got the truck in, made the obvious repair (the heater module in the seat) updated the transmission software (correctly, that is another story about the first dealer) and even gave me a free rental for the day they had the truck. I happily paid the deductible again and I will never go back to the first dealer (the dealer I purchased the truck from).

Moral of the story? Your dealer is in control here! Find a good dealer and I bet things will be better.

Bruce

A couple of months ago after reading about the tech update I took my 2012 F150 Ecoboost into my local dealership. They were aware of the update required. The tech reflashed the ECU (took about 2 hours) and I have not had a repeat of stumble under acceleration. Not all dealerships are created equal.

About 2 weeks ago on the local TV network news there was a story about a class action law suit over Ford Ecoboost engines knocking. Haven't heard anything else about it since. Anyone else know anything about this?

There have been 4 official complaints filed in the class action suit. 3 are for cars and 1 is for the F150. So not exactly a legal storm over it. Shyster lawyers just out for a buck as usual. There have been no injuries or accidents attributed to the knocking/stalling issue. Really sort of stupid in my opinion as Ford as identified the problem and has a simple fix. There is another thread here somewhere that has links to the news reports if anyone cares to look it up.

Also reminds me of the early GM diesel engine debacle not to mention the many years of their 350 tranny problems that they never recognized.

bruce b.

yes, i tried another dealer through ford. the dealer never returned my call. i spoke with customer relations this morning and got to tell the whole story, ALL OVER AGAIN. a district supervisor should call in the nrxt two days. i'm going to ask who is the Best service dept. in my area. the dealer that i went to was the dealer i bought from and had the most informed salesman out of the 8 or so i talked to. i also have a slight sure when cold. i guess i should add that to the list too. i once was a mechanic but left the field because i got tired of spending more on tools every week than food, lol.

I loved my Ecoboost until...

I experienced loss of power three times this past weekend - twice while towing, and one solo. This is in a 2012 F150 Ecoboost. Built in Apr '12. This is the first hint of trouble with the engine.

The two while towing where in slightly damp conditions. Accelerating hard on short on-ramps. Very little power - engine and transmissions searching for a combination that worked.

Took about a minute to clear and I could slowly accelerate to highway speed.

The second time the CEL came on - hopefully that will provide some level of proof to the dealer. I'll give them a call tomorrow and set up an appointment.

Sigh - I've been enjoying this truck...

I have been hearing the turbos more of late. I'm not sure if this is related. When letting up on the accelerator, I hear what I assume is pressure being released. I don't recall hearing this when the truck was newer.
