Ford 2011 F250 Diesel
I recently took delivery of a new 2011 Ford F250 with the new diesel.
WOW, what an incredible truck and tow vehicle. I have the PP hitch and with the new truck, I swear you can't feel the trailer back there at all. Amazing tow vehicle. First trip with the new diesel pulling my 27 AS...18.5 miles per gallon. Truly, incredible.

Is it true that the new ford and chevy diesels require refilling of a urea canister at about very oil change??? I was told that as part of the new emmission control system to keep the Sulfur down.

ULSD solved MOST of the sulfur issue, and the DPF snags the SOOT.

while all the ford/ge'em light trucks have DEF tanks from 2011 onward,
on the cummins/dodge side it's only the 3500 CHASSIS CABs and up that use it starting in 2011.
the dodge 2500/3500 HD trucks use a precious metal canister (think catalytic converter) to remove the NOx...
which means maintenance will cost slightly less for the cummins (it also uses LESS OIL at changes)

a 'tank' of DEF is expected to last 6-7000 miles so that is about when oil changes are scheduled,
but really depends on driving style and load.
IF the truck runs outta urea the trucks will only go very slowly....
we should be able to buy the stuff in parts stores soon, but it will still ad 50-100$+ per year to regular maintenance...

And people wonder why I cling to my 12 valve. That is a lot of unessacary crap to deal with. I have also heard that the DPF gets extremly hot. I wonder if this is going to be a safety issue in accidents?

just 1400 degrees or so...
most of the fire breathin' flame thrownin' issues for FORD were in 08 and have been cooled some since.
when the DPF goes into REGEN mode things do heat up, but an idiot light warns the driver it's happening.
the big issue is idling.
as little as 10-15 minutes of idle time can produce enough trapped soot to trigger the REGEN mode.
regen uses FUEL so the burning hurts mpg, more so on the 08-10s but ALL of them have this now.

I don't think I will be upgradin in my life time. Sounds like some more EPA BS . So I thinks me will keep my 7.3 till I dye.
Is this on 6/0 6.3 liters V8's or what ever they are using now???

A few weeks back I took delivery of a 2011 6.7 L F450 at work... we drag a 20' equipment response trailer and needless to say we now have WAAAYYY too much truck. I can say the engine is friggin' unbelieveable. I can't tell its a diesel 90% of the time...it makes way less noise that the Chebby 2500 gas burner that we also have. Carrying on a conversation standing directly by the exhaust, nobody knew the truck was running!
Time will tell how well it holds up...work trucks tend to get treated like, um, work trucks but so far we are all amazed at this combo...go check one out
I hope my Dodge TD doesn't see this post...

Doing the numbers using my '02 Duramax, I get about 16mpg keeping my foot light on the pedal. If I assume that I would drive about 10k towing a year, fuel prices the same, the difference would be about $250 (at $3.00/gal). I assume this would pay for the Urea???
How is the milage not towing. Without the AS, I get about 21 hwy and 19 in town . I have heard that the reason for the DPF vs the catalytic conversion is to up the HP, and mileage??? I really don't need any more HP...don't know what I would do with them, but extra mileage, that's money in the pocket. Assuming, that is, that the cost of extra maintenance is under the threshold.
Anyone else with a fuel milage testimony with the new 2011's they would like to throw in? I haven't heard but I believe the Duramax is not out for several more months.

Our 2009 Jetta TDI has the urea injection system; you don't get that diesel smell at all... plus, the urea system lets them put the timing, etc, where it needs to be for maximum efficiency rather than NOX reduction.
18mpg towing is impressive.... I'll do a careful measurement of our mileage this summer w/ out 1996 7.3 PS.

as much as i like the clean diesel efforts
AND this potentially wonderful new mota from ford.
there is NO credible evidence it will do better towing
than most of the other rigs poking a hole in the wind at 60-75 mph.

my 08 6.4 diesel f250 gets 11.2 empty and 11 towing. it does not matter if I am on the hwy or country road, it never varies. just towed my 15,000 lb 5th wheel 175 miles all hwy, got 11 mpg. coming back empty I got 11.2.

11 mph is a LOT more believable...
since most folks really do get 9-13 mpg depending on speed.
that's what i've averaged over 80,000 miles of towing with a 6.0, typically 10.5-11.5...
i've read/heard that the 6.4 (08-10) resulted in much WORSE towing mpg, as in 6-9 tops...
so your report of about the same with the 6.4 as the 6.0 ...
is very very good news.

I drove this truck last week... 350 Lariat weighed in at $61,000.00! I hate to think of the depreciation. I have to admit it was nice. The engine noise is on par with all the new quiet diesels and there is no smoke on accel. When looking under the hood it's busy... not sure how easy it is to work on but what can you fix these days anyways...
I think if one of these new engines is in my future I will wait a few years and see how they do long term. Let one of those car hauler guys torture it over the grapevine for two years and check in with him. Sounds like it could make a great used truck at a reasonable price.

I agree. My 16 is on sunny days, wind at my back, and downhill, coasting. A more realistic number is around 13 to 14 in the hills of Rockies. Those numbers I use for calculating fuel stops. If I could be guaranteed 18...well maybe someday those nuclear assisted vehicles will come out.
Say, could you just combine pitstops... Fill er up, change da oil, and take a leak to take care of the urea????

and eventually a tsb/notice will come from each truck maker HQ...
reading something like this...
"attention service departments, please stop looking for signs of chips and programmers and performance upgrades"...

Over 12000 miles of towing the 'Stream, my '01 7.3L 'Stroke averages 12mpg. I've had as high as 14, and as low as 10. Hills and headwinds are killers. I keep the TV tires at 80psi (load range E) and the trailer tires at 65psi. I try to stick to 62mph, any more and she's drinkin' the diesel.
So yeah, I don't buy the 18mpg story either.

Thats my plan too Vinnie. My '01 is closing in on 200k miles. I figure I'll run her till she blows chunks, and that should be a few more years yet, then I'll upgrade to a lightly used 6.7L, assuming its a proven platform.

2008 F250 4wd Super Duty Crew. We just returned from a 28 day trip, covered 5700 miles. Towing 23 ft AS FB. Average was 10.7 mpg based on number of gallons purchased divided into number of miles traveled.

If I keep my foot out of it, I can get 13 pretty regularly while towing. I find that regen REALLY drives the mileage down.
