I don't know much about an 82 Caprice, except that is is big and comfortable. It may not take much to get it viable. What sort of power, transmission and such is in that car?

3-speed automatic or 4-speed auto+overdrive and a 305 is the best it would have unless it was a police-package, by then the 350 wasn't in the regular sedan.

I owned an '83 Pontiac Parisienne (the same car) from new till it was 10 years old.
It was roomy, but they cut the roof so low to make it more "swoopy" looking that the front seats felt more like you were sitting on the floor. Get in it and try out what I'm saying. For such a big car, it was NOT comfortable on a long ride.
And of course, as were all full-size sedans in those days, the rear axle was about a mile ahead of the hitch (or so it seemed).
To my mind, in comparison to today's choices, there are much better TVs available cheap than that setup...

My aunt and uncle pulled a SOB with a caprice. It worked for awhile but the lack of power, overheating etc pushed them to a van. The legacy of cars in that era are why many folks pull with trucks and vans today.
This is a fun and interesting thread to follow. I hope have you success in making a good alternate tow vehicle. We carry way too much crapola to ever consider this option.

When 1982 Caprice's were new we ordered them with the performance Package F41 which came with HD suspension a rear sway bar and better shocks. We would then change the rear springs to Moog Cargo Coils. If a customer came in with one that did not have the suspension pkg we would add the Cargo Coils and Monroe Sensa Trac shock absorbers and a rear Sway bar. None of these mods were very expensive to do. The rear sway bar from a 1996 bolts on so it should be easy to find one at the wreckers if they are not available from GM, new they were only about 130.00.
The standard rear axle ratio was a GU2 2.73:1 ratio, Optional was a 3.08:1 axle GU4. If we were changing out a 2.73:1 axle on an existing car we would put in 3.23:1 gears.
Engine cooling was never a problem but we did add the largest Hayden Transmission cooler to all of them.
We would also change the tires to P215/65R x 15" which handled much better.
A 1970 31 is a pretty easy towing Airstream so you could put the hitch on it and add the mods you found necessary. The 3 digit option codes should be inside the glove box door.
Well a lot of pages to look at. Since I will be fulltiming in an Airstream and need somethingthat can also haul my tool box. I am a ASE master mechanic and plan on working for the park services when the time comes I will maybe if the stars align will be ordering my dream toter. A new M2/106 Freightliner. 350 horse and 1000 lbs of torque. Air ride and you should see the air seats. WOW. Think I might be the only one out there. Pictures of the truck some day.
I wish I could tow with a DeLorean!
A more realistic wish might be a used Porsche Cayenne in a couple,of year's.

My first choice was their deep charcoal color, but these things with paddle shift (and low miles) are like finding hens teeth, and I didn't want to be on the search for months. This particular car was in showroom new condition, so I was happy to live with the white to get this car with all the goodies it has. After driving this for a week now, I think Chrysler is giving these away. They are silly cheap, and really great ride.
I forgot mention one funny thing on this plaque. If you look close in the top left corner it says "First Annual" but they never held another one. I guess a lot of advertizers were not happy about having real fuel mileage published.

You are amazing and awesome! I hoped you would comment on the Caprice. Joe told me ya'll used those for a long time.
Maybe I will use the caprice to tow after all... This one is in amazing condition, at least mechanically - the headliner is the one exception. I don't think this one has the towing package but I will check.
