F650 OMG Why?

I was at Anderson's Frozen Custard in Amherst NY Sunday. There was a guy who pulled up to get ice cream in a very shiny new F650 dually with a pickup truck bed and four doors. Wife and 2 kids. Emergency flashing amber lights all over the grille. It was freaking enormous. Why? What do you do with an F650 pickup truck (maybe I should get one to pull my 16' Bambi.. haha)

There are several brands of over 40 feet long 5th wheels weighing in over 18,000 pounds. Sounds like the perfect tow vehicle for something like that.

Do you need a CDL for an F650 and 18000# 5th wheel?

Actually, 18,000 GVW isn't all that heavy in the 5'er world. Take a look at the DRV line. They only give the empty weights, but gross weight is about 3-4000 pounds over the empty weight.

It sounds to me like maybe that guy has plenty of money and just likes to flaunt it. I'm thinking that maybe an F350 would be a good choice for a 34' Airstream (GW 9800 pounds) but that's because I could fill the bed with stuff and not have to worry about being overloaded. Can't do that with a 5'er.

Why criticise the F650 guy? There are plenty of super heavy monster 5th wheels that would more than justify an F650. Good friend of mine had an Elite Suites 5th wheel (biggest they make) that he pulled with a Freightliner Sportchassis, which is an appropriate truck for such a huge and heavy 5th wheel. Interestingly, they had a 30' AS Classic before that - pulled it with an F350, as I recall.

Does anyone besides me find it ironic for Airstream enthusiasts to say, "Why does he need THAT?!?!" regarding his choice of truck?
