F-150--- How Do They Get These Numbers?

Just looked at the 2015 F-150 specifications. For a Super Cab with the 3.5l Ecoboost w/3.55 axle, they claim a GCWR of 17,100lbs and a Tow Rating of 12,100lb. That is more than 1,700 lbs and 1,000 lbs, respectively, than the max ratings for the Ram 1500 with the Hemi. And the Ecoboost has 8% less HP than the Hemi (but 3% more Torque). What am I missing?

Could it have something to do with the weight of the truck ,isn't the 2015 like 90% aluminum?

Is it with their new 8 or 9 Spd trans? It is always possible on paper if the new trans. has a really deep 1st gear like GM's new 8 Spd.

No where near. Just the body panels. Either way, that would not affect the GCWR. That would be determined by the powertrain.

If you believe any manufacturers claims for towing or MPG, I have some waterfront land in Florida I'd like to sell you.

Read the small print first. What conditions were the specs written for?

Cheers

I've often wondered if the Ecoboost V6 engine is so great and wonderful (I'm not saying it's not) why can't you get it in the F250?

The EcoBoost has a lot more torque than the normally aspirated. That said, it's tow rating is only 600# higher than my '09 F150 with a 5.4L gas.

My 2011 ecoboost has a tow rating of 11,200lb. Cargo capacity in the truck of 2740lb.
But it is a supercab with 8 foot box and heavy duty payload and maxtow. Most people don't like that setup and therefore have much lower numbers. It tows my 31 foot Excella as though it isn't there. Much better than my old 2001 E150 with the 5.4litre v8.

That aluminum body took 750lb of the base weight of the F150. That's why the new numbers are higher than mine.
I've loaded 2500lb of marble in the bed of my truck and it made the truck sit level. That's proof that the payload numbers are true.

I like to get something straight, I'm no Ford person but I think Ford makes a good f-150, mustang, and when they did the crown Victoria , I'm a retired automotive tech after 34 years in the trade , I hated working on fords because they always had a special tools needed to work on them and they designed them to be more work to get something apart to discourage the backyard mechanic,.now to get back to the topic ,if you have ,say a 100hp and the vehicle weighs 1000lbs ,it's more efficient and less stress on components, and can move (tow) more then a engine that has 100hp and that second vehicle weighs 2000 lbs, there are lots of other items that effect this ,suspention of the two vehicles, gear ratios ,( final drive rear diff) and how many gears in trans ( the more gears the more you can reduce the load on engine and keep it in its maximum power curve, cooling , aerodynamics of the vehicle, example a parachute weighs very little (say 40lbs)but takes a lot of power to pull it down the highway versus a (40lbs metal exercise weight) on its end like a flying saucer to reduce its drag further would take very little horse power to pull through the air.
FORD has reduced its f-150 by about 750lbs that's great they say there new truck is about 90% aluminum and it doesn't rust there right but it still corrodes as we all know owning aluminum airstreams, it has a lot to do with the way they prepare and treat ,grade of the aluminum and protect the aluminum from rub through the finish to the bare aluminum ( gaskets ,proper finish etc) the more power per cubic inch a engine develops the more stress on its components . The more cylinders a engine has the more the power lap ( on six cylinders or more)on the crankshaft ,it's like two people CONSTANTLY pushing a car versus two people pushing the same car but one taking a break on and off with two seconds intervals while the other is still pushing one person is going to be more STRESSED

It's marketing mobo jumbo as we've all pointed out before. They'll always advertise the configuration with the best towing, but very few people ever buy that configuration. Ford is notorious for this slick marketing. Just look at around at all the confusion on this forum about max tow vs max payload.

I pointed this fact out in another thread, a Ford Advertisement with 11,000lbs towing rating in bold letters, showing a Ford King Ranch towing a boat, but in fine small print, it says, tow capability configuration may be different from actual model shown.

Most folks don't want a single cab 6ft bed with no options so they can tow 12000lbs. Most will buy a Platinum ecoboost and proceed to complain when they discover after leather and premium sound navigation plus sunroof and crew cab with short bed resulted in 400lbs of payload rating.

I exaggerate for effect, but the point remains the same.

It's also been well established that the ability to tow 12000lbs in theory doesn't mean much if the hitch weight exceeds the vehicles payload, so the numbers go right out the window.

It doesn't come down to which brand is better, because that's always a personal preference. It comes down to you doing your homework and being able to read past the marketing. The big three are kind of like politicians when it comes to their claims.

Those numbers do not mean a lot anyway. For towing an Airstream the numbers that are limiting are the rear axle rating and the payload. Does Ford subscribe to the new tow rating testing procedures? If so, then you can be pretty certain the truck will do what they said. I think it quite likely that manufacturers of trucks see towing as a strong use and are developing trucks for towing more than they used to. Just the fact that they developed the industry test for towing indicates that to me.

My understanding is that Ford was going to J2807 with the '15, F150, but my eyebrow is raised by the published numbers. GM and Ram both are J2807 on 1/2 tons. GM isn't on the HDs until Ford does so. Ford is not J2807 on 250s and >....all this is the latest I've heard, or not heard, as the case may be.

I agree with dznfOg. The fuel mileage test is standardized (although your actual mileage may differ), emissions tests are standardized, horsepower tests are standardized. When everyone advertises their tow ratings are the result of standardized tests, we can started comparing apples to apples. Right now most tow ratings are marketing hype.

I like the automotive press comparison tests: same weather, same loaded trailer, same grade up and down, same altitude. Those tests mean more to me than sales brochures.

Modern pick ups and passenger vehicles are so much better than they were 20 years ago. We often say "I can't believe these numbers!"

Class V receiver to go with it?

It will be interesting to see if they put a class V hitch on the high capacity model to utilize the cargo capacity. I am betting it will come with a class IV (1000 pound max hitch weight) which you will likely not be able to find an upgrade for.

So you will have all that cargo capacity but you will still be over the receiver capacity when you hang a larger Airstream on it with pivot point projection hitch (combined tongue weight of >1200 pounds).

Don't think corrosion on the new fords will be an issue. Yes it will be alum but the material will be a lot different than the material used on the AS body.

There is a big article on Forbes about the new truck.
Ford’s Epic Gamble: The inside story - Fortune

They put an alum truck through the Baja 1,000 with only half making the entire trip down.

I think this will be the leading truck in sales and dependability going forward as the ford brand has show over the years.

I, as a ford vehicle and stock owner, do keep up with the goings on with ford and consider this endeavor to be the wave of the future in gas/fuel saving for large truck.. I see the f-250 brand being the next one to go alum after they prove this frame out in the 150..

If you check out a site called Fast Lane Trucking they do real world test on the various pickups and the eco boost was a towing machine up the Ike gauntlet in Colorado. This 8 mile 7% grade up I-70 that starts at 8200 ft and goes to 11300 ft is a real tow test and the eco-boost was one of the best in the 1/2 ton lineup.

Here's a video from the site showing the first 2015 F-150 that comes off the line to mass applause.
Watch the first 2015 Ford F-150 Roll Off the Assembly Line in Dearborn, MI [Video] - TFLTruck.com: Truck News, Views & Reviews | The Fast Lane TruckTFLTruck.com: Truck News, Views & Reviews | The Fast Lane Truck

A lot of time, money and effort went into the development of this alum thing. One thing to remember Alan Mulally came from the airline industry and was very familiar with alum in high strength needs. While the application is different the strength needed is greater in airline frames than a truck.

I look forward to this new truck and see the stock and it dividend as a good place to put my money so in 6 years when we try to go full-time it provides a good income for us going forward.

just my two cents,, paid quarterly and reinvested in ford stock..
