F-150 Ecoboost / Trailer size.

A 23 foot FC with a 2013 eb 3.55 axle. Amazing power and torque compared to the 5.3l Chevy that I had before. The one downside is that even with this size trailer the truck is 300 lbs over on the rear axle.

No problem towing in the mountains with our 28 International and F150 Ecoboast with Max tow. Love the engine and transmission, very stable with a Propride hitch. Hate the crappy brake rotors on F150s, warp too easy. Also, MySynch is junk. Otherwise, it has been a good tow vehicle for our Airstream for the past 11k or so miles.

We took a trip out west last September and went north on US 163 thru Monument Valley. As I recall the road grade before you get into Mexican Hat was really steep. 13%?. Truck did magnificently in a driving rainstorm. The tow/haul mode worked great even though I had a death grip on the steering wheel.

I drove that grade last spring... I totally agree it's pretty wicked going downhill and towing.

We tow our 25 AS with a 2014 F150 Ecoboost with Max tow and HD payload. Anxious to try it in the mountains, but very happy so far.

I am like you Robert, haven't yet as I don't have an ecoBEAST yet but one consideration is that there is a significant difference in those towing with pre-2015 models as the trucks are around 700 lbs heavier! That would have a definite impact on towing/torque power. As others have stated, that engine is a beast with very low torque RPM and lots of power. The only cutoff I believe would be tongue weight/payload and planned cargo for someone. The new F150 adds all that extra weight of the older models to its payload rating which is around 2100 or so on the regular tow pkg. That is a lot for what is called a 1/2 ton truck. Won't pull a heavy 5th wheel but just about any Airstream. It all comes down to how much truck stuff, people and tongue weight. The towing power is not in question.

The double-tap on the brakes uses the tranny to brake assist like the diesel. This is an electronic function since 2009.

Hi, so far, I have to admit that I'm surprised at the count. If I counted correctly. For trailers that are 25' or less, I counted 10. For trailers larger than 25' I counted 21. This makes me more anxious to see how my F-150 will tow my 25' Safari and compare it to what my Lincoln has done for ten years.

I'm not sure I understand the reluctance to tow something larger than 25' with an F150. Some 30s are under 7000 lbs dry weight and under 900 lbs tongue weight, well within the specs of the F150. What am I missing?

The later models, especially the wide body models are much heavier, and also Airstream is notorious about stating tongue weights unrealistically low, like with no batteries, or propane. It's not uncommon for even a late model 25 footer to have a tongue weight in excess of 1000lbs.

Ok, well this is confusing. If they state "Hitch Weight (w/LP & w/o options, water & cargo) (lbs.) 880" then I can't rely on that?

And is the 10-15% of trailer weight = hitch weight rule of thumb not apply to Airstreams?

I'm guessing a WD hitch will address some of this, but you are right. If I exceed my payload by a couple thousand pounds, I could understand the concern. But I can't get to that big of a discrepancy with my math.

Interesting, so does your 900 LB include both propane tanks full? Also does it Include your hitch? I have always thought the 27 and 28' units were heavier than that. If they are not that's good news for me

Hi, I am too; My Lincoln's 300 ponies probably drops to about 200 ponies in the high mountains. A super charged, turbo'd, or blown engine is supposed to hold it's horse power. So let's say I might be comparing 200 horse power to 365 horse power when I go back to Colorado. I thought that the Colorado mountains were going to kill my Lincoln, but my Lincoln proved to be tough. I'm just as concerned about engine drag going down those hills. Driving single my Lincoln seems to have a lot more engine drag than my F-150.

My Airstream company Safari 25' stated tongue weight is 860 lbs.; however, my CAT scale weight is 990lbs.

Full propane tanks. Stuff under the bed, in the front storage area. In the front overhead etc. Weighed at the campground using a friends scale. Not including the hitch.

Are you sure about that payload figure? I emailed a dealer earlier today and asked them to give me the payload off a max tow 2015 f150 crew cab. was 1777 lbs.

That's very close to my 2012 crew cab with the 5.0 v8.

If you check the Ford website, I think you will find crew cab combinations in excess of 7000 lbs. GVWR that are available. For example 20" wheels and tires are usually rated for less capacity than 18 inches. But they look cooler, so the dealers order them. I'm pretty convinced that the typical 1/2 ton buyer isn't too concerned about carrying a ton of stuff in the bed or towing 10,000 lbs.
