And an "active" suspension, Autoride, which improves ride quality a great deal but without the auto level feature of the 1500's.

My 08 Tundra has plenty of power thanks to the 5.7L motor with 400 lb-ft of torque, a 4.3 rear end and a 6 speed transmission, and it has plenty of braking with 13.9" 4 wheel disc brakes. The weak link is the rear axle rating of 4,100 lbs. I wish there was some way to increase this, but I see no solution, easy or hard.

I would think 1/2 suburban could barely handle it's own weight

While new 2012 ford f150 would do twice good job towing. Yota axles while small I have never heard a bad thing said about them. My nissan 1/4 ton comes with 9.3/4 ring axle forget code name but pretty dam stout. Kind of sad to look at old Rangers and S10s think dana 28 or something like that. Springs in toyota seem to be week link on older Tacomas saggy with little weight. You could always beef up yota Teraflex 60 now that's strong.

The rules have changed

First,, there is a limit what a stock rear axle can handle.. Knew of a GMC 1/2 ton that had bent axle tubes from a over load.. Made a funny noise going down the road and wore the inside edges off the tires..

My research when I got my Dodge last fall,, it boiled down to less than 400 lbs difference payload between my HD 1/2 ton and a standard 3/4 ton.. UNLESS you shelled out the extra $7000 and got the Cummins package. Then the options list, weights and prices grew even more.

I went from the 3.55 gears for the 3.96 option and glad I did.. That alone moved my Gross trailer load up from 7500 lbs to 10,500 just that alone!

So yes one can add some air bags, or updated springs but it all boils down for what the axle bearings and housing itself can handle.

What I found about my HD 1/2 ton was a 4500 max lbs for the rear axle.. The payload is only around 1850lbs.. So there is room for a margin,, but you also have to allow for that huge hidden pot hole you always seem to hit when fully loaded..

As for frames,, do some research.. The newer Dodges use the same frame between the 1/2 and 3/4 ton..

Sodbust,.

Well ... we loved our 2005 F-150 buuutttttt... we like our 3/4 Ton MUUUUUUUUUUUUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH better. We considered all of the add-ons for the F150/ triton to make it more suitable as a tow vehicle, but as has been already pointed out ... enuf said!
