Dodge Recalls 1.2 million pickup trucks

This doesn't sound very good for business.

Big safety recalls in the past haven't hurt Ford that badly. Nor Toyota. Etc.

Interesting-
I know a guy who had a tie rod break on a 2010-
Glad it happened in the driveway and not on the highway towing his fifth wheel and fishing boat-

This is old news! We had a new 2010 Ram 3500 and experienced a recall very soon after we purchased the vehicle--for the tie rod issue.

Our truck passed inspection.

Almost every vehicle made has manufacturer "tweaks" : some major, most minor. With the legal pressures emanating from product liability threats, the manufacturers must err on the side of being overly cautious. Benefit: the consumer!

Actually it is not old news, these are new recalls that deal with, among other things, tie rods replaced under the original recall that may be incorrectly installed, either due to their design or due to installation method. I wasn't clear on the exact reason from the wording.

I use an independent shop and put a adjustable track bar in the front suspension and a support for the steering gear. The recall was never an issue after this modification. They also aligned the front end.

Wonder what an improperly installed tie rod end looks like? Anyone know?

It probably looks suspiciously like a properly installed tie rod end. If I had to guess, I would say it had improper torque values or mounting/securing hardware.

The $24 question is, if they made the error in assembly in Mexico, can you trust the kid mechanics at a dealership working at minimum wage to do any better with installing replacement parts?

Just wondering.

My 2009 truck had this recall some time ago. The dealer installed the new tie rod end and performed an alignment. The truck steers straight as an arrow down the road.
Prior to this event this truck had a previous alignment by a supposedly reputable shop and after a summer of towing the inside edge on a front tire was wearing quickly.
This year the tires seem to be wearing evenly and the steering is great - could it be I found a good dealer service department! I can only hope so.

crispyboy, Next time you go there ask them if they know anything about the Ram trailer brake controller. No one around here seems to know anything about it.
