I am less enthusiastic about the 6 cylinder tow idea. I say fix the tranny. You are still way ahead of the game with the diesel.

How is the engine running? Using a lot of oil? Running hot? If everything else is OK I would put the new transmission in. Most come with a warranty. You did say "otherwise great TV". Nothing wrong with tranny design, it lasted 250,000 plus miles.
