Diesel F-150

Diesel F-150?
Spied: 2017 Ford F-150 TurboDiesel - PickupTrucks.com News

I'd like to see another 1/2T diesel. What about you?

I'd like to see the first one! Nissan broke out the XD at last year's Detroit Auto Show. This fall, the media finally got up close. There were token "pre-production" models shown at other shows. No touchie, no sittie, no drivee

But, at least so far, there are none on the street to test drive much less purchase.

Worst new vehicle introduction ever.

And I am a Nissan fan...

Mike

The Nissan seems to me a bit more than a 1/2ton. Nissan had a big display with the Titan XD at the State Fair of Texas. You could even drive one.

I'd like to see and drive an F-150 with the 3.0l diesel from the Range Rover with 440 lb/ft at 1750 RPM.

I wonder at the choice to use the 3.0 V6 instead of the 3.2L I5. They do squeeze more torque out of the 3.0 and they can probably piggyback on the certification work done for Land Rover and Jag, but the 3.2 is already in use in big-fat-heavy vehicles (the Transit) in the US. I guess it could also be a capacity issue.

Jag and Land Rover are owned by Tata Motors. Not sure how close Ford and Tata are.

It will all depend on the premium one will have to pay for the diesel compared to the Eco-boost. If it's Ford's normal premium of 10,000 - 12,000 here in Canada, it will be a hard sell.

Since Ram already offers a diesel in a 1/2 ton I would think offering a turbo-diesel in a half ton would be even more attractive. Especially for towing, up hill.

The engine family was developed by Ford before they sold Jaguar and Land Rover and is produced for sale to those companies at a Ford plant in England.

Ok, didn't know that. However, in my experience, Americanizing any overseas product, powertrain, or chassis is incredibly expensive. Even if a portion of the development costs of the component are defrayed, the EPA requirements, safety requirements and certifications are exorbitant. There has to be a forecast of sizable sales to justify.

Land Rover is selling the 3.0 turbodiesel in the US for 2016 so they may have shared costs of modifying and certifying to spread the cost over more vehicles. I don't know that to be the case but it's a reasonable assumption since Ford produces the engine in the first place. Maybe that's what got them to offer it here, Land Rover was chipping in for federalizing it.

Love the paint scheme. HATE LOUD DIESELS, ESPECIALLY IN CAMPGROUNDS. But that may just be how the video was taken.

If it's LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS, not for me. Sorry, and I'm a Ford guy.

Just my 2 cents.

Jim

While camping down here in the Destin FL area, I stopped at the local Nissan dealer last week and took a close look at the new XD. I'm impressed with all the interior room, fit and finish look great. I'm 6'4" tall and set the driver seat to fit me and then got into the rear seat directly behind the driver seat and had a ton of leg room. Seats felt comfortable and supportive. I declined a test drive (would have made me want to get a new truck before I want to). Maybe in another year or so, I'll get serious and consider the XD.

Maybe a single new product is the answer to both the 1/2 ton vs. 3/4 ton debates, and the diesel vs. gas debates : a 5/8 ton truck, with 500 ft. lbs of torque, and a sealed engine compartment so nobody knows what is in there.

Oh yeah, and it could not show who made it, either.

Calling the Titan XD a "5/8" truck is an interesting marketing ploy. I've only seen in print that the GVWR is "over 8500 lbs", which is in the territory of an OLDER 3/4 ton truck (before HD and super duty).

It is interesting that Ford is considering joining the lighter-weight (less than HD/Super Duty) diesel market. We need to hear what GM is doing. Right now, GM only has the diesel mid-size trucks (a 2.8L I4) - which would haul a big boat nicely, but it isn't my ideal TV. I like the idea of a 1/2 (or even 5/8) full size pickup for a TV. And diesel would make it ideal.

Hi, British built by Ford; What's wrong with that?

3L Diesel - VW can probably price some cheap ones....

Joke aside, we are pulling with a 3L VW engine and pulled with a F-150 gasser as well. Mucho more torque and uphill power in the Diesel engine. Of course, the tuning of the Porsche mods is a little out of worldly... But Ford could easily do this, would be verrrrry attractive...
