Have you tried, recently? I don't think you can. There's no manual listed on the SuperDuty configurator on Ford's site, for example.

Manual transmissions behind the pickup V8 diesels were such a lousy combo, they were dropped a decade or more ago.

Not sure what you were driving...the 7.3 International with 5 speed floor shift was awesome. And we converted the GM 6.2 diesel with an S-10 trans awhile back. Again, not for everyone but it would pull a house.

The manual is still made in very small volumes. Doubt you will ever see one. And that's good. I got sick of seeing people slip the clutch, racing the engine. I could get that clutch fully out and the truck moving in 2 or 3 revolutions of the engine.

Yeah, today's drivers should stick to automatics.

My kids had to learn a manual before I ever let them on the road.

The guys using them commercially were going broke. You couldn't give away a Ford in the oilfield. It was that bad. No one autos were all that great back then. The ZF is a nice trans in itself. Didn't matter. Maybe you'll get to slide a Cummins under a real load and experience the difference.

And it's only the older Cummins I see out on the highway today, still working.

No one I know went broke driving a 7.3. My boss sold his, falling apart from rust and 250,000 miles on it, for $7000. Old Internationals, Detroits, and Cats only quit when the frame rusts in half.

Why would the Cummins work fine with a manual, but not a V8 diesel?

Didn't matter if it was RV haulers or oilfield hotshot. Where the truck is the source of income, only one was capable of the work. In the latter the trailers would get above 20k in weight.

That's why Ram is the #1 seller and Ford is #3...oh wait...

I owned a 7.3, turbo with a 5 speed overdrive, with 4.11 gears...i run it for 185,00 miles and couldn't wait to get rid of it...went for a dodge with a 6.7 and 6 speed auto and am happy with it,the ford was kind of a dog.....

So a brand new Dodge is better than a 20 year old Ford. Go figure!

I would stay with the Ford 3.5 Ecoboost vs. diesel. My son is a diesel mechanic and says anything diesel is high maintenance cost. As with anything I would not buy a new engine model for the first few years.

Over the next 10 years we are going to see more and more towing power in the 1/2 ton pickups. That's because they are used for everyday driving, and that's who RV'rs are. They are already way better than a decade ago.

Diesels have higher repair costs not higher maintenance costs especially if you are or are trying to keep them in service for a million miles. Aside from that if you tow for a living like I do and your number one business expense is fuel you can't afford to tow with a gasser. It directly affects my profit line and there is no efficiency in towing with a gasser. I say that being a big fan of the venerable Ford V10 and who doesn't like at least the power of the turbo 3.5.

Fortunately the diesel Ford/Range Rover lion motor isn't a new untested motor. I suspect the 3 liter will become the go to for commercial moderate weight towing & the 6.7 will continue to dominate heavy weight towing. At least for Ford.
