Dealers, 'Wholesalers' and other vultures...

...are snatching up the well-priced tow vehicles as soon as they are listed, then flipping them for big money. I've been following the used Excursion and 3/4 ton Suburban/Yukon market closely in recent weeks and have noticed that it is very difficult for an individual buyer to purchase one of these well-priced vehicles before the vultures jump on them. I had this happen with 2 Excursions last week and a Suburban yesterday. Here's the original ad for one of the Excursions:

2003 Ford Excursion Limited 4WD, $15,000 - Cars.com

Here's the new ad for the same vehicle being flipped by a "wholesaler" for a $5,000 profit:

Cars for Sale: 2003 Ford Excursion 4x4 Limited in Ashland, VA 23005: Sport Utility Details - 282063715 - AutoTrader.com

Many of these Excursions and 3/4 ton Suburbans/Yukons are selling for thousands $$$$ over NADA. I've noticed some members here recommending used Excursions as a "good buy" for a solid tow vehicle, but the reality is that many of these Excursions are selling at incredibly inflated prices. Suburbans too, but I've noticed the Excursion is a bit more popular with the dealer vultures. The word is out and it is extremely hard to find a truly good deal now.

I for one welcome car dealers for the service they provide in making a market and having a selection of vehicles available for purchase without the aggravation and uncertainty involved in working directly with a private seller.

:-)

In this situation, I'm not sure what service the "wholesaler" provides other than a toll free phone number and a $5,000 price premium on a $15,000 vehicle.

Get the word out

Remember to get the word out there on obvious buy & roll over dealers. It is what the market will bear that makes the difference. If they can't move a rollover they will stop trying/buying. Quickly, if the are outed or can't sell them at the inflated prices. Ed

Jake, I had the same problem trying to purchase my Airstream. Not the roll-over part, but the part where I was a day late & a dollar short, more than once. Airstreams were being snatched up in a matter of hours from Craigslist ads. One guy I called within an hour of his ad being posted and he told me he had so many calls he didn't think he had put a proper price on it. He pulled the ad and cancelled his phone. It comes down to being in the right place at the right time with the right money.
And the guy who THINKS he MIGHT get 5k more than he paid, probably won't. More like 2 to 3k if he's lucky, or he could find he still has it in a year and drops the price to move it.
Hang in there, and BE ready, so you don't have to GET ready.

Real easy solution...don't pay their prices. Eventually they will either flood the market or people will wise up.

Just normal every day business.

Hi, this vehicle looks to be in great condition, [2003 Excursion] and the seller will most likely get his price. Low mileage and clean looking. Usually someone who has to finance, will buy it and pay the price. For me, I would want to get rid of the Harley Davidson decals, possibly put the exhaust back to stock, and for sure, I don't like the "Mickey Mouse / Hong Kong / After Market" tires and wheels.

My opinion.
