Crash while towing down the interstate.
This was posted on a truck forum. I've never seen it, so I thought I'd share it with y'all.

seems like the guy just kept accelerating. Normally when a system becomes unstable, the path back to stability doesn't include increasing the amount of energy in that system

My first instinct was to look for brake lights. I didn't see them so it doesn't appear he made that mistake. Hard to tell if he accelerated a bit.

But wouldn't the brake lights go on if the driver applied the brake controller to manually engage the trailer brakes? And wouldn't that - and easing off the gas - be the right reaction?

I believe you're right about manually engaging the trailer brake controller. I don't know if that engages the brake lights or not. Anyone? I think I would maintain the throttle though as you want to tighten the string as quickly as possible.

Brake lights come off the car brake light switch. Don't think trailer brakes only will light them.

He was probably going > 70 mph. Sway control system was either nonexistent or not adjusted. Instead of slowing down, he tried to finish the maneuver, perhaps even tried to accelerate. Wind might have been an issue and an unlucky "match" of TV/TT with the Truck's shape to trigger the initial sway....
Perhaps also "too much truck for a light trailer" and overconfidence that the hitch setup is irrelevant and the truck is able to pull the tt out of a tricky situation. But for all we know, it could have been a catastrophic failure of a component of the hitch, so difficult to speculate...

That is what you want to do. Never slow down. Hit the trailer brakes and the gas pedal! After you get it under control you can slow down, but still use the trailer brakes to keep it tight. JMHO

I believe he should change his shorts, if he did manually hit the brake controller, I do believe the brake lights would have come on, try it and see.

On our setup, activating the trailer brakes via the brake controller causes the trailer brake lights to come on also.

Safety chains, receiver, drawbar (stinger) aint going to do nuttin in a violent situation like that....and that's probably a good thing for the TV occupants.

I dunno, but for a big truck that'll roll over if you breathe on it wrong, it did a pretty good job staying upright with all sorts of non-intended instability inputs.

Kinda wimpy about stabilizing the trailer though.
Indicates to me the importance of proper loading and a high quality sway control or sway elimination hitch, and how fortunate we are to be towing Airstream trailers.

I don't care what ANYONE says, when a trailer starts swaying step off the gas and apply brakes gently to regain control. Period.
