Consumer Reports Worst

The top 2 vehicles from 2016 not to buy are the Chevy/GMC Tahoe, and the 2500/3500 Dodge Ram and, it also listed the Suburban and Escalade. All had electronic and 4 wheel drive problems among the list.

Yay!

This goes back a few years, but let me relate my own vehicle buying experience with Consumer Reports.

The first new car that I ever bought was a 1967 Opel sport coupe, which was rated a Best Buy by Consumer Reports. The car was a disaster. I had to replace ignition points alongside the road a couple of times and it needed a new engine at 25,000 miles. When I asked the mechanic what I had done wrong he said, "Nothing. Most of them don't make it this far."

My next new car was a Chevy Nova. Consumer Reports rated it Not Acceptable. I drove it about 125,000 miles and gave it to my stepson who drove another 75,000. By that time it was so badly rusted out that he gave it to a friend who put the engine in a pickup truck and used the engine umpteen miles more.

So, I don't pay too much attention to Consumer Reports.

Ditto, I have many similar stories about Consumer Distorts.

JD Powers is about the only unbiased science based statistical study out there which I would believe......on any product or service which they study.

Oh, and Vincentric, for total cost of ownership breakdown.

Even Motor Trend and Car and Driver have some conflicts of interest which drives a component of what they do.

We had 4 trouble-free Volkswagens in our household for years when the kids were still home, Consumers Report hated them.

Maybe I should mention that we have towed all over the country with Ram 1500 4x4 pickups for the last five years with zero problems, only routine service which was done well at Ram dealers. That's a more significant test to us than what that rag they call a magazine does.

Their beloved Tundra we had was in the shop for two major repairs, one required pulling the engine.

Nonetheless, betcha Pappy wouldn't have posted this if Ford made the list. He's a Ford guy and that's just fine, but we have had many excellent vehicles that CR told us otherwise.

My 1996 Tahoe served me well for 18 years and still looked good when I sold it with 180,000 miles. The 2006 Escalade that I still drive has 160,000 miles on it and still gets compliments. I did have to put a starter motor in it.

Actually there were 2 Fords on the list, the Focus and the Fiesta, but none of the Ford trucks or SUV's made the worst list. No one is saying that of the brands on that list, every one will be bad. What is says is the brands listed have warranty history that indicates problems in specific areas of the vehicle. Your results may vary.

Ever since CR got caught cooking the books and lying a few years ago, I don't take them seriously.

Interesting, but my experiences with Consumer Reports is about the same as everyone else here. Things I have found to be outstanding usually show up in the CR bad list.

Back in the late 80's I was part of a class action suit against Consumer Reports. We won. They are not as unbiased as they pretend to be.

If you don't drive the vehicle 100k miles, you have no idea how good or bad it really is.

Many people confuse Consumers Reports with Consumers Digest, which is a magazine wholly subsidized by the automotive industry. I take these reports with a grain of salt as most people with problems are the ones that are most likely to talk or write about them.

Ultimately the greatest impact to your vehicles impression of durability, reliability and longevity is how you drive it in the first 1000 miles and how you maintain the vehicle.

A case in point.....the Toyota Yaris is one of the highest rated vehicles out there, but to the lady that owned one; who did her first oil change at 27,000 kms, her next one at 48,000 kms, and her last at 54,000, was upset at Toyota for not replacing her blown engine under warranty at 57,000 kms and went to a TV stations "Go Public" program to complain about it. I don't doubt she won't buy another Toyota.

I have a 1995 Jaguar XJS convertible; undoubtedly one of the worst vehicles around, and yet it has provided us years of trouble free motoring due to my preventative maintenance.

Cheers
Tony

Like I said, if every vehicle listed as the worst was in fact, the worst, the brand would not be in business, period. This list is based upon the results of warranty problems for that year. It is what it is and your results may vary. I would guess that from 2003-2011, Ford diesels were probably on their list. Not Ford gas and not Ford diesels since then.

It's not based on warranty claims, it's based on poorly written consumer surveys, poorly compiled and poorly reported.

My knowledge and opinions go much deeper than that.
