Two quick items:

First, hello everyone, newbie here. Caught AS madness about a month ago, and since then, I’ve been occupying my spare time with anything airstream…. Which led me to this site. Lots of good stuff here, thanks! (btw- no don’t own one yet, caught the fever after borrowing Dad’s Classic30- still researching)

Second, have to vent over the lack of new family friendly towing vehicles- either I’m missing something, or there is ONE currently on the market. Ford E-350 diesel. We’re talking family of >6. Dodge- forgetaboutit, GMC- a full tow equipped Yukon has a tow capacity of 8000lbs??!!

Hi And welcome!

A Suburban/Yukon XL can be equipped to tow 12,000# and seat up to 9 people...in style. You may also find a nice (now defunct) Ford Excursion.
That oughta do ya!

GMC does not appear to have published it's 3/4 Yukon specs yet, look at this page for the 2007 3/4 Suburban specs, tow capacity is 9500 pounds with a 4x4 3/4 Suburban. http://www.chevrolet.com/suburban/specifications/

The 12,000 pound spec would be an '06 Suburban with the 8.1 litre V-8 which is not available in the '07.

thanks...

i guess, my real problem is the (maybe) 2 vehicles out of our entire US auto lineup, that are family-ready, and tow-worthy. seems to me, 25 years ago, there was no shortage of capable, family-sized vehicles....

on top of the fact, the yukon talked about above, costs as much as a house... i could get a HD2500 pickup, and a chaser caravan for the same $ (but what fun would travelling in two seperate cars be?)

hi fcjoe and welcome to the forums...

all new vehicles in this class (big towing capacity/big space) are costly.

a used excursion psd is a good choice value wise and for longevity.

so too an e-350 psd van...and with dual rear wheel models....a unique look.

mercedes/dodge/frieghtliner/sprinter vans have pretty good towing specs, space and better than average mpg....

how about a used school bus?

cheers

Ford has redesigned the Expedition for '07 and part of that redesign included a model named Expedition EL. It will be an extended length version of the Expedition that will be somewhere between the Expedition and the Excursion.

It has a tow capacity of 9,000 lbs per their web site and the regular Expedition has a tow capacity of 9,200 lbs. This is for the two wheel drive. The plus for the EL is that it will have an extra 24" of additional length behind the third row seat for extra cargo or the family pet. Either regular or EL is an eight passenger vehicle. Cost will probably be similar to the Suburban, though, since that will be its target market (XLT version of the EL starts at $34,445).

You might also consider one of the Airstream Safari models since they are lighter than the Classics. We have one of the last 30' Bunks with the Sofa and can sleep 8. If you can find a sofa model with the optional queen bunk, can sleep up to 9. However, even with just a family of just four and a cocker spaniel, it can get cramped inside.

Hey Joe! Why not take a tour of the Classic Motorhome forum? You could take the whole family in a 345 or a 370 and you don't have to be stopping for bathroom brakes for the ladies..... Lot's of options abound in MOHO's and TT. Good luck with your search and welcome to the forums.

Decided on (and found!) a 2005 Suburban 2500 with the BB 8.1L engine. Low mileage, and GM certified- so hopefully she’ll be a stout tow vehicle. I ‘recon she’ll even handle the 34’ SO we’ve got our eyes on….

Enjoy it and care for it, because it's a dead breed. They stopped putting the 8.1L engine in the 3/4 ton Burb (and maybe even beyond) starting with the 2006 model year. Until they put a diesel in the Suburban/Yukons, the new ones only have the 6.0L and if you have a slide out or a 34 footer, or have a 30 or 31 footer you load full to capacity, the Suburban and Yukon are not gonna do it. What you have is a niche machine that soon, many folks will be looking for. If a diesel every does appear, it will fill the need, but I would guess that there will be a premium price for such a beast, making your 8.1L Burb, all that much more appealing. I nearly bought a 2004 and me pops talked me out of it. Should have gone with my gut.

thanks. taking out his '05 classic brought back a lot of memories of my parents '76 sovereign 31. would love to rehab an older model. the biggest problem is not having a spot/shed big enough to park it while i work on it....

btw- there's a '05 classic 31 for sale out near your neck of the woods....
