The same thought occurred to me when you posted the pictures. Twins, almost, kinda. That truck would haul that Airstream pretty much anywhere and you'd only need to own two or three banks. I get about the same mileage out of the '57 with the sixty over 455 as you do with the Burb. Donna gets a bit less but she is more aggressive with the start ups than I am. I suspect it is because I'm the one who fixes it when it is broken . I had hoped to use our 70 Chevelle as a TV this year so I could spend the summer going through the wagon but it doesn't look like it is going to have a hitch on it. It would seem that it having a four speed has the current TV driver concerned about towing with it.

I would love to see your Chevelle and Safari together. What a site. The Ford has pulled the Safari into places my wife said she will never go again. The Ford is also the economy tv as far as fuel mileage goes. Maybe you can hire a driver so you can both enjoy the ride. I may know someone with some time on his hands and would like to drive a 70 Chevelle.

One thing that has not been discussed is the on the road repairs with classic and vintage tow rigs and trailers. On our 3000 mile trip which included the Oregon trail, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Boseman and Glacier National Park. I had to replace two alternator brackets. Three header flange gaskets and they never happen in opportune spots. So you must have a little "McGiver and lots of tools hose clamps, tape, wrap ties" Now that we a back home and the correct gaskets no more problems.Click image for larger version

Classic Tow Cars/Repairs While on Road

In nearly 4,000 miles with my '75 Cadillac Eldorado convertible (120,000 original miles) towing my '78 Argosy Minuet 6.0 Metre, only one mechanical failure that happened on first day out. The three-year-old Goodwrench alternator died (only had 2.200 miles) -- too two tries to get correct part as the first sent was too small -- the second was the recommended replacement for the GMC Motorhome which I had asked for initially -- no further problems.

Murphy's Law is my constant traveling companion, but I have been fortunate when it comes to mechanical failures. The alternator failure is the first time I had to be towed in. My other mechanical issues have been nuisance more than anything usually involving a failing or failed automatic transfer case control module on my '99 GMC K2500 Suburban (now has 200,000 miles); and once a failed electronic control module for the windshield wipers on the Suburban as well (banging it with a screwdriver would get the wipers going when needed during the last day of travel on that vacation). The suburban also had an electronic control module in the transmission fail, but it went into "limp-home" mode and I was able to get into Salem, OR for the International Rally where it was easy to have repairs made.

Good one Ralph. I don't know the models but I guess I'd better bone up on them when the search begins. So far not even a blink when I drop subliminal hints. Oh well............

As for mechanical problems on the road we've had a few but then until 2006 we were putting many thousands of miles a year on the car with and without the trailer. Much of that is through the mountains in very hot weather so the few problems we've had are more from very hard use. I just couldn't seem to ever let anything sitting beside me at a light get to the other side of the intersection before me , I guess a hang over from the drag racing days. No longer though. As with Overlander64 most all of the little things that have happened, and we are not talking many, were frequently failure of rebuilt items that were clearly not up to the quality of the original parts. We find the life span of many rebuilt or parts that come from China to be a fraction of what the original was. I'm very insistent now when buying parts that I will only take made in North America and where ever possible I will take a new GM part over the lesser cost alternative supplier. Paying a bit more at the parts counter is far cheaper in the long run than trying to fix it again on the road somewhere.

Dave - I got tired of header problems and grenaded my after market ones and first went to a stock exhaust manifold which did impact my torque noticably, but then spending a bit more loot than I'd of preferred and got factory cast manifolds. That eliminated my header leaks completely. They don't look quite so trick but I can't honestly feel a loss of power and they still have a nice tone. They were kind of pricey and sure did kick the doo-doo out of my car fund account for a while. I got the information on who was making them from that fellow at Deming last year with the self built housetruck. He also was running a Pontiac 455 with the good heads and the same intake and carb.

We do carry a good set of tools, a few hard to find parts that would not typically be available in at a small town parts store, and a small plastic tarp to lay on and gloves and rags. Just in case.

Thanks Barry
Both the Cameo and the 58 chevy are fun to drive. I actually bought the Cameo to pull my 64 Safari but ended up selling it during a week moment now I am keeping my eyes open for something to go behind to 58 chevy cause I love to drive it so much. Great looking car you are towing with there too.

A buddy just acquired a '56 BelAir 2 door hardtop to tow his vintage SOB. A major project that was stopped by the seller due to a serious car accident he was involved in (in a different car) and his now inability to complete the car. The advertisement was hugely misleading, and the price way out of whack, but after a careful assessment of the car and considering the value of the various components that came with it an offer was made for a quarter of what the original asking price and the seller took it without a moments hesitation.

So, by mid summer, another vintage car will be leading a vintage trailer down the highways and byways. Now, I just have to convince him that the best thing one can do to give their '56 Chevy some real class is to put a vintage Airstream behind it.

Yep, now I see it. Sorry for the late response, have not been on the computer much lately. I think you are right on the vintage. Neat picture. I love seeing vintage pulling vintage, even when they may have both been new at the time. I am very hopeful we will be out with ours this year.

Thanks for sharing the picture. When I see that I want one of each but I know that she who does the banking and puts up with me would soon be she who awaits trial for throttling something other than the tow vehicle if I dragged another one home. Oh well....

Wow Brad, haven't ever seen that one before - at least, not in brilliant 21st century color!
Thanks for posting!

I will have to ask the wife if there are any existing photos.....her grandparents used to tow our Sovereign with a variety of Chrysler wagons....not classic back then of course, but I would love to hook it up to one now

Brad,

Now that's a truck I would jump on... though I'm not sure my checkbook would up to the task. Vintage utility body... sweet.

I have no interest in this, no stake, no connection or anything.
But, I thought it was pretty cool.
A 1974 Buick LeSabre with 25,690 miles & a 455. Richmond Indiana, Studebaker Chevy, I think.
Here's a link to an image: http://images.cars.com/supersized/DM...0/4064C.04.jpg

I could almost be tempted

Well Lori and Will, you guys have a neat, and fairly unique, set up. I'm sure you get a lot of attention on the road and in CG's. Great fun.
