Ram Truck Emissions Recall N40 (Cummins Diesel)

I had my truck in the dealership the other day for routine maintenance (because it was handy), and they told me there was a recall to reprogram the powertrain control module, and asked if I had time to get it done also.

I asked them what it was for, and they said it was for "emissions". I asked if it would hurt my fuel mileage, and the rep said, "Oh no, if anything it will help you fuel mileage". This guy must be taking lessons from some of the politicians of today.

Bottom line, my fuel mileage has gone down a solid 15%, both towing and running empty since the change. So, if you have a Ram 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins engine built before '13, you will probably be getting the recall, and if I had it to do over, I would not let them change it.

The recalls are monitered by the dmv. The dealer has to fill out a proof of correction that the owner needs to present as proof in some cases.I am not sure how quick the dmv responds after the recall is released

That may be the case in your state, California, but I was given no "proof of correction", only the receipt for the work done and the reprogram listed as N/C.

How it works in TX is that only certain counties are "EPA Non-Attainment" areas, requiring a hookup to a diagnostic computer at inspection time. If TX is concerned about certain emissions recalls, they could check for the particular software revision or somesuch, but all I've ever heard of them doing is failing for an emissions-related fault recorded in the computer, or because the computer responds "not ready" because it doesn't have enough run time since a reset, to keep people from resetting right before inspection in hopes that they'll get it inspected before a fault code is set in memory.
