Would you consider a van like the Express/Savana?

As you can see by my avatar and signature, I tow with a Tundra.
For some reason I can't see a lot of folks on here think it is an inadequate tow vehicle...
It has worked for me for 7 years...
If it is overloaded it doesn't seem to know or care...
I don't want a topper, but maybe a hard 3 or 4 section folding tonneau...

We shouldn't be to quick to bury the Pentastar V6 based on the failure of this engine. It has some bad reports but there are lots of them out there, many pulling Airstreams successfully.

I admire the op for his persistence and desire to do it right, and for knowing when to cut his losses.

PS..... Years ago my cousin bought a new diesel pick up. He was in the fishing industry in the Maritimes and when he got the call to get out on the water he had to drive to the boat ASAP. He bought the diesel because he thought it would be the most reliable. Instead it too was a lemon. Always blowing head gaskets. The dealer had the head off it many times to no avail. They just couldn't fix it. Not sure of the outcome but it goes to show it doesn't mater what you buy there is a risk of disappointment.

Best of luck with your next steps.
Mark

I agree with RR that your 300 has a lurking defect. I don't think that you picked the wrong vehicle. I just think that you got a bad one. Just the luck of the draw. It could happen to any one of us.

Good luck in finding your next TV!

Dan

Well, its kind of spooked me. I was really leaning toward a Chrysler mini, but...after reading about their problem, I dunno.
It doesn't sound like this particular 300 had that problem (yet). It has a different problem, (still undiagnosed) that also damaged the heads. The original head issue with the 3.6 still remains. They (Chrysler) say they fixed it...it only happens on a small percentage, yadda yadda...but it keeps popping up. Their "fix" was to redesign the heads--(not once, but twice); that means that the flawed design is out there in the fleet, (anything 2012 and previous, but it isn't clear that its resolved, even with the new head design) just waiting to happen. They won't say exactly what it is, or why it happens, but its some rare combination of circumstances--bad gas, driving condition, driver behavior. If I knew what the circumstances were, maybe I could avoid them, but the fact that they won't say tells me that they think that if I knew, I wouldn't touch a 3.6 with a stick.
Leaning now towards an Acadia or possibly a Durango with a Hemi.

The problem (and there may be more than one) is reported to be a valve seat insert that moves in the head, resulting in a leak and subsequent overheating. It is because of the valve seat connection that there was a focus on bad gas, etc. It appears to be a manufacturing issue with the head and the seat, more than a design issue. They may have had to redesign it to make it easier to manufacture. I stand to be corrected on this, but I believe the problem exists with a certain range of production dates.

I wouldn't want to talk anyone into this engine, as I would want to make sure myself it was dealt with as well. But given Chrysler's corporate bet on this engine and their broad use of it I think they will put every resource into coming up with a fix. Whether they are there or not yet, I don't know. I would like to see them resolve it, as it is a pretty impressive engine apart from this head issue.

Jeff

Not an airstream owner yet, but hopefully very soon. I have been reading the forum quite a bit and saw this latest thread.

For my wife's business we have two Dodge Grand Caravans with the 3.6 Pentestar engine & 6 speed trans. One is a 2011 with 140000km (approx 87K mi) and the second a 2013 with 85000km (approx 53K mi) without any problems. We haul a lot of weight inside them usually exceeding the max payload speced by Chrysler, I would say that 90% of the time we have about 2200lbs+ of product in the vans and at least once a week I make a trip to Buffalo NY towing a 6 x 12 closed in box trailer (old U-haul) full of product in addition to the van being full. We have never weighed the trailer but you know it is there. To date we have had no problems with the engine in either but we do maintain them well and I have installed aftermarket external transmission cooler on both.

Just thought to provide some real world information that not all pentestars develop problems. I had a 2010 Toyota Sienna that had huge problems with electronics and sever valve knock that the dealer was saying it was fine. The motor failed with only 70K km on it and luckly still under warranty. They replaced the entire motor and I traded the van in shortly after that on a new 2013 Venza as we don't need a min van any longer as our kid is not a kid any longer .
