So, due to this thread, I asked my trusted service guy. He says when the DIC says about 20% left is soon enough for the fuel filter, assuming you always get clean fuel along the way.

What always scared me with my Touareg TDI was that no where could I find WHEN to replace the fuel filters nor was there a "water" drain available....

Wondered - how,why,what...

Side note, the "water in fuel" light came on yesterday while driving down the coast, quick two minute drain while at McD's SteakHouse (McDonalds) and done....

It sounds like the new 2011 Duramax gets good MPG, but how much DEF does it use?

Design intent is one tank per oil change as dictated by the oil life monitor. This could be slightly variable though.

flyingflinn is in CA and will be getting that diesel smogged like the gasers. He'll never pass without an unmodified emission system. Diesel emissions tests coming to all states real soon.

Apologize for a newbie question: What is DEF? Thanks for helping with my education on diesel.

Diesel exhaust fluid. Acts as a catylist in the exhaust stream to reduce pollutants. In 2011 going forward.

This years small diesel trucks have to have a urea injection system to aid in the reduction of emissions.

Ah, Diesel Exhaust Fluid. So, this won't apply to out 2008 Duramax, then?

We took delivery of Fred, the truck (2011 Silverado 3500 Dmax) last week. We just drove Fred from Jacksonville to Santa Rosa Beach on US 90 at <55 mph for 320 miles. It was a long trip at that speed as we are still in the initial 500 mile break-in period. Fred got an impressive 21.1 mpg on this all day trip. He was traveling empty with just a driver.

Fred now has 485 miles under his belt, and I will soon see how he does at highway speeds towing Lucy.

Nice looking truck Brian. Certainly great mileage for a brand new one ton truck with an engine that is not broken in. It will be interesting to hear how Fred's mileage is when towing Lucy.

So far, I'm impressed with new truck. I'm anxious to see how he will do with Lucy in tow.

Fred just completed his first tow of Lucy. He pulled her from Jacksonville to Tampa (200 miles) on both US 301 and I-75. Fred pulled at 60-65mph on 301 and 70-75mph on 75. The average mpg was 14.7. Here are a couple of shots of Fred and Lucy during a rest stop at Citra on 301.

Wow, the safari looks like a Bambi behind the longbed! I bet power is not an issue at all!

That's true. The crew cab long bed is 21' 7" long. Lucy is a mere 4' 4" longer than her new tow vehicle.

The new truck pulls Lucy very nicely. We hope this remains the same when we load the truck camper.
