I have owned a couple of 2010+ Chevy 2500HD's with 6.0 and 6 speed. My trailer has a loaded weight of 6500. I have towed many times in the Rocky Mtns wtih not problems. A very good truck. Cast iron 6.0 has a history of very low failure rate.

I believe the 6.0's are cast iron only in the 2500 / 3500 trucks.

Perhaps I am a pariah, but I feel a certain amount of default courtesy is due to drivers around, and behind me.

I have bought two new Chevys with the 6.0.
Drove them both to 150K miles. I am due for a new one now and looking.
I don't pull my AS anywhere.
But I have hauled tractors and equipment all over the country. Typical load is a 5K tractor on a trailer that weighs about 1.5K.
I have work boxes in the bed which add about 1.5K in weight. 4X4 also adds weight. I have the 4:11 rear.
Granted I have less wind resistance.
The 6.0 with 4 sp auto will easily run 75mph.
If you need more power, if you need to go faster then that then you really should consider taking a vacation somewhere from your hectic, driven lifestyle cause I really can't see needing to go any faster.
Why this board is so caught up in overkill I will never understand.
500 HP?
OTR trucks don't have that much power and they weigh in at 80 K lbs.

I have to agree that the "overkill" guys and the "good enough" guys will never understand each other -- and there is no need to because we each get to choose our own style. But, I am the guy with the 500 hp smile on his face!

Seriously, for many it is not a question of going faster. It is about entering freeways, crossing high speed highways, decent performance at elevation, and keeping up with traffic on hills -- these are safety issues.

Another example: this difference in where we each get comfortable is why some upgrade their wheels and tires, and others feel stock is good enough.

Until our high-or-low performance choices become a risk to others, it does not matter. And offering the range of opinions to those who ask is one of the best things about the Forums.

I had a 2012 Sierra 6.0 2500 4x4 that lunched a transmission at 980 miles due to faulty cooling lines. I was towing my Safari in Utah at the time this happened. When I requested a new transmission from Chevrolet, I was told that the new policy was to replace with a rebuilt unit. Took a bath on a trade in and bought a hemi powered 2013 Grand Cherokee with more HP and torque than the 6.0. My complaint is more about GM's policy than the performance of the truck.

I have a 2015 3/4 Denali, Gas... No issues towing EB27 fully loaded around 6800 up inclines etc. Of course I haven't been to the rockies in it yet. Might be singing a different tune then.

Thumbs up

Denis,

I don't believe it's a new policy. I never had a problem with a 'rebuilt' Trans while at the Chevy Store.

FWIW....A GM SERTA,(service replacement transmission assembly) has a 3yr/100000mi warrantee.

There are no rebuilt transmissions or engines installed under warranty. They are remanufactured.....two very different things. And, I believe you would find the same policy at most, if not all, manufacturers.

Chevrolet / GMC 6.0L Engine?

A properly rebuilt or remanufactured unit is every bit as good as new, and sometimes better than new.

I am not sure if you made your decision yet. I have a 2012 GMC 2500HD with the Cast Iron 6.0L, 4x4 Crew Cab with 6.5 foot box. I have the 3.73 rear end. I wrote all of the above because you need to be really careful with the GCVW, my truck as configured is 15,500 combined max trailer + truck. My truck at normal operating without family and camping gear weighs in just shy of 6900 lbs. this leaves only 8600 lbs for my trailer and all the gear. We normally pack, bikes, firewood dogs and 4 people. Last year we did a 2400 mile BC to Oregon round trip. I hit an unmanned commercial scale just to check and we were within 600 lbs of our GCVW while towing our 1976 Overlander. It is a shame, not sure really how the GVVW is calculated as my trailer axles totaled 5,500 lbs which seemed very reasonable. Just be careful is my point, my father has the same 6 speed, same 3.73's in a 2008 version which has less power and his GCVW is 700 lbs more than mine. I can't explain it. While travelling Southbound on I-5 we hit some short but decent climbs around Grant's Pass area, the truck and trailer will lose about 10-15mph, I used to have a 2004 6.0; with the 4 speed and it didn't really like to rev passed about 3500 rpm. This new version, will pull all day at 4500 RPM without moving the thermo 1 deg passed the 100 mark. Our Oregon trip was in the summer 2015 where the heat inland was in the 100-110 deg range. Be prepared as others have stated 10-10.5 MPG towing, and 13.5 MPG empty everyday driving. I took my last one to 210,000 miles before I sold it, I still see it driving around 3 years later. No major repairs, the old belt and I think a water pump.

They are good trucks but on steep grades you aren't going to hang with the diesel guys. I would recommend the 4.10 gears if you tow a lot, it also negates my entire ramble above on the GCVW issue.

Happy Trails
