My 2000 7.3 has no emissions systems and at 110,000 miles no problem. And it WILL out pull your gasser and stillget 13mpg pulling the AS. Case closed. Sal.

Sorry, case isn't closed. My V-10 has well over 100 more hp than your 7.3, it isn't even close. In fact, the only stock diesel engines that give me any competition are the new Ford 6.7 and the new Duramax. All the others including the new Dodge Cummins, are easy. In over 81,000 miles on my V-10 here in Idaho and Utah up mountains, solo or towing, my V-10 easily whips them. They have to hop up their diesels to just keep up with me and 7.3's are the easiest. No brag-just fact. Now it is closed.

Not really, the original question was from a nice lady wanting to know what would be a good tow vehicle. If she was going to be towing every day or even once a week, then she might even want a diesel but does she need one? I think not. A gas rig set up right will do her a good job and she doesn't have to get her perfumed hands messed up with stinky diesel fuel, plus she can fill up anywhere, and her oil changes will cost her $19.95 or less. Regardless of the brand of vehicle, I think she will be happier with a gas rig than with a diesel. You big tough boys need your diesels, I know, but not everyone needs one.

pappy, wow, my point was diesels are not as loud as you might think, they generate good HP/Torq while getting pretty good MPG. You counter with how much HP that V10 makes at 4200 RPM's, while you're getting millage measured in feet per gallon.

When you pass those Cummins on the hills how do you stand the shrill from all those little pistons pumping so fast? I googled diesel sootbag, but only found other posts from you on the ford forums taunting the diesels with your V10.

Your Youtube has only to do with tires. That type of pulling is just so much bogus. Even pulling my AS I never get below 8.5 and mostly 9 or above. If all you've got is better mileage then say so, but there is no power contest between a 7.3 and a 6.8 V-10, as the V-10 will win every time. I can handle my little pistons working hard just like you have to turn up the radio while your little injectors are about to blow. Have you changed out your CPS lately? How many times has that 7.3 lost an intercooler boot just as you were topping a hill? I know all about those 7.3's and I also know their limits.

You must have one of those "special V-10's"...

Look, I do love the Ford V-10, but remember - torque is king, diesel fuel has more energy per volume than gas thus "dollarFordollar" - diesel wins hands down...

Long term owner, gonna put some miles on your TV, tow in the mountains, etc. Just can't see your logic gaser being better than diesel, more dollar efficient, no way...

Important to have these dialogs as it helps others to make their own decisions, educational as well, etc.

Guys you all need to relax. All trucks/suburbans can get you from point A to point B.

But, IMO the best way to get there is a 2011 superduty.

Yeah, I priced a decent F-350 6.7 diesel Lariat 4X4 in Bountiful, Utah last week at a sticker of $59,750 and that wasn't even totally loaded. With the new V-8 at 365 hp, you could start at least $8,200 less from the start. When I sold my 2002 F-350 7.3 it had 182,000 miles on it and it was very tough for me to sell it. But, I spent alot of money on that engine making it run with the big boys, and it did. However in the summer of 2007 the new diesels were of the 6.4 variety with the sootbag plus lifting the cab to work on the engine(are you kidding me??), so I ordered a V-10 in my 2008 and equipped it just the way I wanted it, plus I got it on the X-plan and a 3 year lease. This 2008 V-10 is by far, the best Ford truck I have ever owned in the past 18 years of Ford trucks. Again, we are about to embark on a 7500 mile trip pulling our 30' Classic from Utah to Florida and back to Idaho. The V-10 has 81,000+ miles on it and we will see how it does. If it blows up, you will know, and if it does me a good job, you will know that too. You will find me to be a very sensitive, tolerant fellow, and I like reds over whites.

On the other hand we had some folks in today that purchased a trailer. They just picked up a new F150 with a 4.6 Litre for 17,900. For the difference between that and a new superduty they purchased a very nice Airstream and in 10 years the Airstream will still be worth something. They will have to shift down on some hills and climb at 50 MPH instead of 65 MPH. Fuel cost will be the same or less than the Super Duty. It will be quieter and smoother.

Just another way to look at it.

That's the best logic I've seen in this whole thread Andy. Good for you.
That's why they put in six speed trannys. So you can get there nicely with less power but probably better fuel economy, and definitely better fuel economy when not towing. And most of us don't tow all day every day.

Yes Andy, you are the man. It doesn't take a zillion hp $60,000+ diesel to tow an AS. As you point out a good gas rig with a new 6-speed tranny can handle any AS made for most situations. Thanks for posting.

Yea - but why knock us guys who love both our trucks and the Airstreams we tow around?

My TV I expect to cruise 12 hours and enjoy every minute of it - and that's what I base my RV on - so far I've been spot on...

I can tow all day and get out and ready to go!

The disagreement began when you didn't know the current price of diesel vs gas and insisted all these diesels are unreliable.

Andy, they should have bought the one with the 3.5L EcoBoost!

Seriously, everyone spending within their means is expected. If the OP gives a price range that's helpful. If they just state their favorite brand up front that weeds out a lot of the brand battles.

Certainly everyone is going to have different tastes in vehicles, the beauty of an Airstream is that it gives you the flexibilty to tow it with plenty of different types.

Many people like driving a 3/4 ton diesel, in fact a friend of mine drives one all the time and he never tows anything. If you love driving a 3/4 ton without a trailer certainly it is going to be your first choice with one and there is nothing wrong with that. You just don't have to if you prefer another vehicle type.
