You can also get a 1 ton rating in the single rear wheel configuration. And is some cases it is actually rated to tow a bit more weight

Ford went to a larger displacement diesel engine because of new emmission regulations not because of problems with the 6.0. There were problems early in the life of the engine but by the time regulations had changed these had pretty much been ironed out.

Wouldn't it be easier to redesign for emmission regulations then design & build a new engine?

The 7.3 was built by International, wasn't the 6.0 built by Ford?

I thought the new 6.4 is again built by International, not sure?

Dually?

Streamer1,

I am not quite sure why you would want all that heavy springing for a 25' trailer, or for a 34'r for that matter.

One of the big cons against having too much heavy rear springing is the fact that it will beat your trailer to death, literally. Your hitch and thus the front of the trailer will have a very rough ride because there will be practically no give in the rear suspension. Therefore, when going over rough roads or poorly designed bridge transitions, you will be SLAMMING the front of the trailer up and down, instead of a more cushioned ride. This will have a severe effect on the frame and the internals of the trailer. Just as too little spring can be dangerous, too much can be destructive. Somewhere in this forum is a discussion on this very subject.

Seriously consider a 3/4 ton diesel picking up truck or comparable SUV. You will be much happier with the ride especially sans trailer.

After a moment of "hysteria," and being "slapped silly" by colleagues for my "moment of weakness," I think I can safely rule out any further thoughts of acquiring a dually. 3/4 ton though sounds like it may make more sense for me.
