Back from first run with the T-Reg & the 28CCD

Just did the (mostly flat) trip with the 2010 Touareg V6 TDI pulling my 2010 28 CCD (lightly loaded). I have the Reese dual cam sway control with 1,000# distribution bars (barely lifted).

Here's the report: Woo HOO! Pulls great and handles like a dream. The whole set up is very solid. My TDI has the lux package with the 20" rims with meaty disc brakes on all four air-lifted corners. I LOVE IT.

Touareg Towing Awesome

Totally Awesome Dude!!
I wondered how the V6 TDI would tow, and congrats on the new Touareg!
I hear rumours that there is going to be a V8 TDI in 2011.

The Airstream is such an amazing trailer to tow, I don't even feel it behind my Touareg. Passed a slow vehicle on the highway, going up a long, very steep hill.
It also makes almost no difference at all in my fuel mileage.

My mileage while towing averaged 14. I get 17-18 MPG normally. That's a lot better that the 8-11 Mpg with my F-150

What speed were traveling? Terrain? (Same for old TV?)

And, how did that rig do on the scales?

Welcome guys - getting ready to tow (one again) coast-to-coast via Steamboat Springs in the Rockies - luv the TDI.

On the straight roads I average about 16-17 mpg around 70ish - with no trailer around 25-26 cruising around 80ish.

My Airstream is a Classic 25fb with ProPride Hitch - the T-Rex smokes my older 2005 V8 Cayenne S in torque and mileage!

I just wondered where the Speed Limit is 80ish. Id bet money you would gain fuel mileage if ya slow down just a tad,say 70 but 65 would be even better.

Thumbs up

I used own a 2002 TDI Jetta and loved it! We I was shopping for a SUV I walked away from VW because of the problems with the TR. But the V6 TDI has me drooling! How would you rate the 2008 2009 series? I'm ready for a new TV and for size, power and MPG I think VW has them all beat! Also the TDI forums were almost as great as this one. Very helpful site.

Thanks!

Speed Limit

The newer 2008 and up models are great to get now. They have no problems like the past ones had and tow just the same as the rest. That would be my choice if I were to get something like that.

In Florida speed limits runs 75 mph on the hwy but everyone drives about 80+ normally. This is without towing though.
I have seen several vehicles that were towing in the past doing the 80+ actually had one pulling an Airstream at one time pass me.Pretty crazy stuff.

That is CRAZY! I tow @ 60 but knowing I have the extra power and better MPG would be nice. I miss my old TDI!

Hello,
I own a 20' 1972 Argosy that I have never towed. It has been in the driveway for 6 months now due to lack of tow vehicle. I almost pulled the trigger on a V6 Touareg last weekend. My question is, for my older lighter trailer is the v6 sufficient or should I really be looking at the V8. I am looking at 06-07 models. Any thoughts on year diffs?
Thanks,
Kathy

What is the loaded weight of your Argosy when loaded? If you get a V6, get the 07 with the V6 FSI motor. Much more horsepower and more V8 like.

Is there really that big of a difference between the 06-07 V6's? I've never towed the trailer, so I've never had the chance to weigh it loaded but here are the specs:
Specs of Argosy:
20 ft
4450 gvwr
2880 fac dry wt
470 tongue wt
Thanks!

2007-now 3.6L V6 FSI ~ 276 HP
2004 2006 3.2L V6 ~ 220 HP

You are well within GVWR on the Touareg. Either should tow fine. The 3.2L V6 will get a little breathless when passing, heading into strong head winds and at high altitudes but I have done all of this with my original 3.2L V6 and had no major complaints. Also note that the 2007MY Touaregs had a few extra features that would be nice, like power hatch assist, adaptive xenons and keyless start. The Touareg is an excellent tow vehicle and has understated luxury for much, much less than Porsche, Mercedes and BMW. It is an excellent daily driver.

Even more importantly - the 3.6 has greater torque than the 3.2 had....

Nothing has more torque than that monster V10 out here in North America - but there is always hope they may bring the new TDI V8 over from Europe - more torque and horses than the legendary V10 but with better gas mileage and cleaner emissions...

Till then - NOTHING CAN TOUCH THE MIGHTY V10 on our shores for Torque-TO-Mileage ratio (and I secretly would love to have one)!!!

I already drive a bit too fast for many on this forum with my TDI and get many, many dirty looks when running over the mountains as I pass almost everyone going up and over the mountains. I would need a bigger trailer if I had any more engine....

Careful about speed discrepancies between vehicles on those big hills. "Slow" may not be the only thing concerning the driver of some rigs on the uphill portion (control problems).

Passing them on the way up isn't the point. Worrying about passing everyone on the way down . . . is.

No decision yet....

My target date is January to have the tow vehicle. I had pretty much decided and talked my husband into contributing for an '07 V6 Treg...but then I saw an '04 with 70K(1/2 the age and less than 1/2 miles of my current outback) here in Austin. Now I'm strongly considering this as I could save QUITE a bit of $$$ and put towards a second new vehicle next year. The diff is 7K. 13K vs. 20K for 2007. I know the '04s had a few issues....

Also it doesn't have a tow hitch. Are there any issues with having this installed by VW service shop vs. coming installed from the factory?

Thoughts on '04 vs '07?

I had also looked at the Trailblazer and Durango.
