Plug and play means you buy a brake controller and plug it in. Controllers are often available with plugs that fit specific vehicles's recepticles under the dash.

They sure make it hard to find that kind of info on their website!

If there's a factory hitch and 7 pin connector and it's sold as a tow package, I'd assume it's got an integrated brake controller. Obviously double check that, but it doesn't make sense otherwise - unless - the wiring harness is included for you to select the controller of your choice and install it to the pre-wired harness.

VW's mobile website leaves something to be desired.

But 7000+ lbs of towing capability would cover my 27FB Flying Cloud with plenty of headroom!

Good luck!

I suspect he was comparing the 7 pin to a 4 pin, which only controls running lights, brake lights, left and right turn signals. The 7 pin adds trailer brakes, alternator charge, and ground. You'll still need a brake controller.

Ah, Mr. Tinloaf and SteveSueMac, you make sense. And thanks, Denny for the reassurance. The VW tech said he would do the research and get back to us. He clearly had not dealt with this question before. If he does the research, I will post here.

The Touareg does not control the brakes ala integrated brake controller and a 27FB is too much for a Touareg. Read the posts on this thread and then come back if you have any questions left to ask...

And another dealer tech who is uneducated. Yes, you need a brake controller. The Touareg does not come with one, only the wiring harness to connect one. It is located near the steering column wrapped in gray foam. Go to: Club Touareg - Volkswagen Touareg Owners Community and search for "brake contoller".

Just purchased a 2012 Touareg TDi. Believe I'll be shopping for a brake controller in the weeks to come. With a dry weight of 4855 / 515 hitch weight, we'll probably only use the VW for local jaunts with known routes. Long trips will bring a Dodge 1500 truck rental.

I have written instructions on how to hook up both the Prodigy P2 on a 2005 - 2007 Cayenne/Touareg and 2009-2013 Cayenne Touareg with Prodigy P3.

Check this site as I posted both sets of instructions online, the latter model Cayenne\Touareg requires a relay for proper install.

John,

I have your instructions and a new controller and will be off to the dealer today. We have spoken to the dealer a couple of times about this and we seem to be on the same page. I think it was a communication issue.

Thanks again. Caryl

John, do you have a link to that instruction sheet you drew up? Also, our Ambassador has been towed with what must be the original distribution hitch (stirrup and saddle style, chain tensioned). In light of the fact that VWs official policy on weight distribution being bad, do I simply go direct to the receiver with a variable height ball hitch? I don't want to break the Touareg or cause some highway catastrophe.

You are well within the capacity for towing your AS with a Touareg. Your Touareg has better brakes, better handling, and more torque for towing than a Dodge 1500. However, a pickup truck does have more room for stuff on long trips.

Mojo,

Thanks! As a legacy Land Rover and Dodge Ram owner, I'm a fan of the old-school boxed frames. This uni-body thing is new to me and I don't want to tweak the new ride. I feel confident in the Touareg and I'm sure I'll gain more as I start towing the Ambassador. We never travel with the white tank loaded - I'll just have to get in the habit of buying the beverages once we've set camp instead of towing all the booze up the mountain.
