Neat-o! Of course the best way to teach the kids how an engine works (and the way I studied up before I rebuilt my mustang's engine) is this - the good old 'visible v8'

that is very cool , gearheads will notice how the flame front favors the intake valve area as the plug fires the mixture ,there is turbulance in the chamber also ,shown by the fluttering of the flame as it burns . No deposits on the intake or exhaust valves either ,cylinder wall looks newly honed as well .it appears the engine is in new condition .There is quite a high velocity of the fuel /air mixture as it comes in around the intake valve.
You can also see the fuel being squirted in by the injector ,most notable as the intake valve is starting to close .The idea is for the fuel and air to swirl as it comes in to the chamber ,fully mixing the two elements for complete combustion .An excellent look at the combustion process in action

I had forgot about those. I saw one the last time I was in Hobby Lobby. My older son is fascinated with how anything works (and my younger son is following in his footsteps in that sense, too) and I had to try and explain how a car works to him when he was about 8 or 9. I sure could have used a visual to make the description a lot easier for him to understand than my feeble explanation. A "Visible Transmission" and a "Visible Differential" would be good tandems to that lesson if there is such a thing!

I actually got a four cylinder version of the see thru engine for my boy .
Hes almost 12 now ,we really had a good time putting it together .Of course
I HAD to go and cut off the plastic parting lines off the crankshaft pins and cam, in addition to smoothing the journals and applying a little vasoline jelly to lubricate them .It did operate really well when we were done I must admit.
