'74 Argosy 26...

Hello everyone, what a wonderful find this forum has been. I've been reading nonstop for 2 days..SmokelessJoe has me totally awed and the knowledge base here is formidable. I'm sincere, even if it sounds like I'm blowing smoke...I'm glad I found this forum.

I'm looking at a '74 26' Argosy and I'm wondering about weight, safety and my tow vehicle. I have a 2002 GMC Sierra V8 which I use to haul my horses. It is rated at 6,500 max trailer weight, 11,000 GCWR, Gross Combination Weight Rating...Will this be enough truck for this trailer?

She's a good puller and has done some good hauling for me in the past..I'm just not sure she's up to the task with this size trailer. I thought with the experience here someone might have an opinion.

Thanks for providing so many hours of entertaining and informative reading.

A 26 foot Argosy should weigh in about the same as my 1975 25 foot Trade Wind (4200 lbs dry). Loaded I would guess around 5,000 to 5,500 pounds. As long as you don't overload the truck you should be fine. My previous truck was a 2003 Tundra with the 4.7 engine and it did very well pulling my trailer.

Thanks for the information. It's a factory tow package and being a Ford truck groupie..3/4 ton and 1 ton...I've really been kinda impressed with the cream puff. She's done good...nothing fancy or impressive but comfy and capable.

I don't know if I'll get this trailer but if I do it's good to know we can use it with the truck we have.

Thanks again,
KJ

Smile 26 Ft. Argosy tow vehicle.

In reply to Kjane and towing vehicles. I recently and I might add luckily traded labor for a '74 26 Ft. Argosy and took it on a maiden voyage this weekend. We towed this with a '92 dodge B250 work Van (Plumbing truck) with a 318 V8 engine, auto transmission with the electronic over drive lock out. No equalizer hitch. We live in western Montana and had a few hills to climb and did 250 Mi. round trip with no problems or overheating. Ran the air conditioner in the van all the way for comfort with no problems.
Now I want to find out if my '97 Crown Vic with the police intercepter V8 and heavy duty suspension (Ex police car) will tow this Argosy with an equilizer hitch? Any suggestions? This Argosy was a real plus! everything worked! We keep finding all the little extras like reading lights above the twin beds, TV antenna that works and cold air conditioning!

Wow..

What great news!! Sounds like you got a really good deal and being able to use the vehicles you have is a real plus in my book, your's too I'd imagine.

I have talked over the Argosy with my son an we've decided that we have too much on our plate at this time to take it on. We have a 1730's stone house we are renovating so common sense rules..I guess. This would have been my second AS but I'm a patient person.

This might be a good opportunity for someone else so I'll post it here. The unit looks like a good one...I've asked about windows, dings etc and all the windows are there and in good shape, the only dents are in the underside (where they are common)

eBay Motors: 1974 Argosy 26 - Nice shape - NO RESERVE! (item 150268742021 end time Jul-15-08 14:00:21 PDT)

Maybe someone here can benefit from it...I have to wait...

Best of luck...this is a great place and I'll hang around...
