5.7 Tundra Real World MPG?

It's been nearly a year and a half since I started this thread, and now I've finally made the switch from a 2007 Tacoma to a 2009 Tundra. Real World MPG? First tank from Casey's General Store (with a few accelerator rompings just for fun) was 15.7. Tank #2 was Phillip's 66, with absolute zero of the fun stuff fetched me a nice 18.94 miles per gallon, both tanks (non-pulling) in the rolling hills of Northwest Missouri. Glad I made the switch even though I had to drive to Montrose Colorado to get the truck.

I haven't seen very many regular cab Tundras. That thing oughta haul and have plenty of towing capacity.

What's even stranger looking is the Double Cab with the 8 foot bed. I'm amazed how PUs have progressed. Regular cabs were the norm years ago and now everyone wants 4 doors and lots of bling as a daily driver but they still get lousy mileage.

I've always had small cars getting over 30mpg and when I started towing a trailer a few years ago starting with my Casita I bought a preowned 4.7L V8 4Runner. It was a shocking experience at first to see it barely make 19mpg solo and even towing the Casita only 14.5mpg at its best. Never had to pay so much at the pump and gas was around $3.65. I guess I've become acclimatized to it because wasn't shocking to me to see only 11 to 12mpg towing my Airstream with my Tundra 5.7L DC, 2x heavier and 2x longer than my Casita so I was glad it wasn't 8mpg. Luckily my Tundra is not my daily driver, my Mom's 2004 Civic is my commuter-mobile.

As my brother in law keeps telling me, you have to pay to play.

I have seen a Double Cab long bed. The guy wanted an across-the-bed tool box and then room for an ATV with the tailgate closed.

My daily drivers are an old V6 Pathfinder and an old 88 cubic inch Harley. Both get better mileage than the Tundra.

Not many regular cab short beds out there, and 2013 was the end of the line. My Buddy and I put in a 36 hour day going out to get the Tundra, and that was the closest one in over a year of searching. I like the 20 inch shorter length, plus it's 400 to 600 pounds lighter than the rest of the Tundra's. Missouri gives a 180 day window on sales tax to buy a vehicle after you sell your old one, luckily I got the Tundra bought on day 180.

Just purchased last week...

2010 with 18,000 miles. Thinking about changing out the tires already as the P.O. had - all terrains - on 20" rims installed, and I find them noisy.

Do most of you have 18" rims?

Mine has a pretty fresh set of 18" Cooper Disoverer tires, thanks to either the previous owner or the dealership. They are a little rough starting out, but after they get warmed up roll pretty smooth, and quite. If it were me I'd have gone with Yokohama, or Michelin.

I've got stock aluminum 18" with 255/70x18 Michelins. Other option is 18" 275/65x18. I would expect higher loadings on the 275 tires but my 255 Michelins are rated at 2465lbs at 44psi which together is 4930lbs which is over the GAWR of 3900lbs of the rear axle. I would expect slightly better gas mileage with the 255 tires.

Check the load ratings on the your current tires on the sidewalls.

Did you get it at Turner? We bought our Tundra there in '07 and paid below invoice. Of course, we are a lot closer to Montrose than you are.

Yes, I got My Truck Fred at Turner, I thought they were very nice to deal with, and coming from me (one that normally groups car dealers alongside shady lawyers, politicians, and pimps) that means a lot. I would highly recommend them. I dealt mostly with Ed who I thought did a great job.

Checked out Turner. They only have 5 Tundras in stock. Do they sell that well or has Toyota reduced production. Same issue in Springfield, MO. This is supposed to be Toyotathon month but no one has much Tundra stock. Maybe something new coming in 2016 other than a slight cosmetic change?

i sold both of my 4x4 Tundra's for the same reason, rotten fuel mileage and bumping right up against the tow limits of the truck. most happy with my overkill F350 diesel with headroom to spare and much improved fuel efficiency.

Montrose is not that large a town, so 5 Tundras on a dealer lot is plenty. They, like all dealers, can get new ones (and probably used ones) from other dealers. I dealt with the sales manager in '06 and '07 (2 different Toyotas) and that worked well, but he has retired.

Turner is not a mega dealer that has to drive you around in a golf cart. They didn't need 500 Tundra's in stock, just needed the one that I wanted.

Hello! My husband and I pull a 25ft Airstream with a 2014 Tundra with the 5.7 engine. This is our 2nd Tundra with the bigger engine. As crazy as it sounds, we have never checked the MPG! We figure, what big engine really gets good gas mileage! It tows very well and we feel very safe in it! If I had to guess the tow mileage... I would probably say 13/14 mpg, towing. That's with the fresh water tank full or there about and both propane tanks full! We love our Tundra! Hope this helps! ???? Beth

Regular cab short bed. For your other question though you'll need help from the younger folk. At my age the Tundra has a range between stops that far exceeds that of my own.
