4WD and 2WD Towing Question

The manual of my current 4x4 truck says it has a stated tow capacity of 6,100 lbs. A 2x4 truck of the same model is around 6,300 lbs. Does that mean if i am towing in 2x4 mode I can tow 6,300 lbs?

No, it means that a 2wd weighs about 200 pounds less that a 4wd

It is typical for a 4x4 to have less capacity due to added drivetrain weight.

You are restricted to 6100lbs.

It means that a 4X4 truck weighs 200 lb more than a 2X4 truck because of the extra weight of the transfer case and drive shafts etc, which are sprung weights. You can only carry what the sticker on your door says (legally)!!

Nothing “legal” about it. It’s the recommendation of a private party. Like your neighbor down the street.

You can tow whatever you’re willing to try. The “tow rating” doesn’t mean much. Leaves out how that decision is formed. We can build an 1800-lb trailer your truck could never get above 5-mph.

At best it’s ballpark.

Does your TT weigh 6,300-lbs?. Well, the shape of an AS is such it takes 20% less HP to pull. So let’s be realistic (in the way those ratings are realistic) and state your AS weighs only 5000-lbs.

Cool, huh?
