2017 F-150 Power

Just saw Ford announce power ratings for the new second generation F-150 Ecoboost at 365 HP and 450 lbs Torque. Pretty big numbers for a little motor.

Put fuel injection and a forced air, supercharger or turbo, intake to cubic inches. Check the numbers on Mopar's Hellcat

Look for the limits of the 3.0 Eco Diesel to get pushed a bit further.

I hope the automakers continue to add turbos to an ever increasing offering of engines. Better fuel milage, better emissions, and more power.

With all that horsepower and torque, maybe we'll be able to ditch the trans.

Yeah, my brother was all about the new 'ecoboost'. Yap yap yap. I told him, you better hold on to that V8 F-150 he has in back yard.
I said the used V8’s will likely demand a huge premium, in a few years, while these small blocks will go to the crusher with a bad turbo. ( silence)

The V8 is dead, Long Live the V8 !

It seems that the small turbo charged engines do a good job but they will never have the "sweet sound" of a V-8 with dual pipes which really does something for me

1965 Fuel Injected Corvettes... never hit the crusher

I remember my 1965 Corvette 327 cubic inches with the largest fuel injection system GM had for their factory vehicles.

Few spare parts in 1970 and the fuel injection ran off the of the distributor. When the Fuel Injection gear... stripped... you were stranded. Went to a four barrel Holly as a back up. No one felt that Fuel Injection was worth the trouble...

Today everything is Fuel Injected. Today a smaller cubic inch engine can produce more horse power with a turbo... and people may say the engine will fall apart.

Time will tell. The experts and pundits have been wrong more often than one can imagine.

Now a 1965 Fuel Injected Corvette is worth a nice, new 25 foot Airstream! So much as being a junker ready for the crusher... less fiber glass body.

Because they crush vehicles with a (rare) failed turbo, rather than replacing the turbo?

I've personally put nearly a half million miles on vehicles with turbocharged gasoline engines (spread over only 3 vehicles, lest you make an unsupported assumption) and if I include the miles on my partner's 2 turbocharged vehicles we're looking at about 800k miles between us. On ONE of those vehicles, a primitive 1980 carbureted 2.3l turbo Capri, I replaced the turbo when doing a rebuild at about 150k miles because its non-water-jacketed bearing was starting to weep a bit of oil. No other turbo problems (or any serious engine problems) on any of the other 4 vehicles.

Anecdotes are not data, but there's anecdotal evidence on 5 long-lived vehicles that suggests that modern turbocharged engines are not all grenades waiting to go off.

Most, if not all, long haul diesel trucks are turbo. There's no lack of turbocharge durability.

I almost think the bigger news is the transmission that is going to be attached to this updated engine. 10 speeds seems to be a lot, but I suppose you would always have the right gear available. I wonder if it makes rear end ratios less important with such a big spread of available ratios in the transmission itself. Curious to see how long till GM has it in their truck, since they supposedly worked together on some of the design of it.

10 speeds. REALLY? Is more always better? Just put a CVT in it. Infinite speeds.

I think this is true. I read somewhere that the 10 speed will have 3 overdrives, and will allow Ford to build heavy payload/HD towing configurations with lower ratio'ed rear ends. A positive for overall fuel economy.

The new F150s appear to be much more capable towing and hauling machines than those just a few years ago. In 2010, I quickly ruled out F150s due to payload capacity for my application. Now, they are worth a second look.
