When towing our 2014 31' Classic with our 2012 Ram 2500HD Cummins, I usually see 11.5 mpg overall, but on level stretches of Interstate, I have seen close to 13 mpg with a rig weight of 19,200 pounds.

For our engine, peak torque is at 1,650 rpm which is 65 mph in 6th gear.

Driving the two lane roads in Texas from Paradise to San Antonio with posted speed limits of 80 mph, I was getting over 17.5 mpg keeping up with the slower traffic driving the speed limit.

I'm still continualily amazed at the fuel mileage I'm getting with this Cummins.
Just to keep my feet planted firmly in reality, I've begun using the Fuelly app to track my mileage.

I never considered fuel mileage as a factor when I purchased the Ram but it is really very nice.

It's the average over the course of a year.

As to towing, run the same course at the same speed. A two hundred mile loop, let's say. Cruise control on the whole way.

One is then looking for the percentage drop from solo to towing. 40% or less can be achieved. Above 40 and work needs to be done. Even with new vehicles don't assume trailer bearing preset, brake adjust or alignment is correct. Same for truck where alignment and brake drag need to be checked. Steering slop on 4WD. Next would be the lash up of truck to trailer.

Gasoline vehicles, 1966 or 2016 see an average of 40% drop when towing and all else is good. But tend upwards to 50%.

The best turbodiesel vehicles range down to near 30%. Granted, concern about FE is relative. But concerns about handling and braking should not be. This will be reflected in mpg.
